Commanding Jewel Primed for Let’s Elope Stakes

Running on to finish a credible third in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) in what was her first appearance on course this year on August 30th, co-trainer Troy Corstens is confident classy mare Commanding Jewel is poised for a return to the winner’s circle in this weekend’s Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m).

Securing an impressive total of four wins and three minor places from just eight competitive starts so far, Commanding Jewel was forced into the paddock following an impressive win in the 2013 Let’s Elope Stakes after injuring a tendon, before again being ruled out of racing in autumn following an unfortunate training accident.

Bidding to become the first runner to take out the Let’s Elope Stakes twice, Corstens said the Commands mare has progressed exceptionally from her first-up run two weeks ago and is confident of a polished second-up performance upon returning to Caulfield.

“She’s really bounced out of her first-up run and looks better in the coat,” Corstens told AAP.

“She’s a really happy mare and looks very strong. There’s still improvement to come but we’re really, really pleased with her going into this.

“Hopefully second-up she can do it again this year.

“I think with that little pipe-opener it has brought her right on and it will stand her in good stead second-up.

Stamping her claims as one to watch from her maiden racing preparation through the 2012 Spring Racing Carnival, Commanding Jewel comfortably won each of her first two races by over a length before finishing second in the Group 3 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m), third in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) and breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m).

Appearing in-line for another strong preparation through the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival prior to her injury, Commanding Jewel is currently featured as outright $2.50 favourite and clear market mover for success in the 2014 Let’s Elope Stakes with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
