A number of top mares are set to resume racing at Rosehill Gardens in the Sheraco Stakes 2014 on Saturday including the Chris Waller-trained Catkins.
The daughter of Dubawi is one of 15 fillies and mares making up the field for the $125,000 Group 3 Irresistible Pools & Spas Sheraco Stakes (1200m) on Golden Rose Day this weekend.
She carries the 58kg top weight under the set weights plus penalties conditions and is due to jump from barrier seven with Hugh Bowman in the saddle.
A five time Group 2 winner, Catkins was narrowly denied a Group 1 victory last Melbourne Cup Carnival when a nose off stable mate Red Tracer in Flemington’s Myer Classic over the mile.
During the autumn she won three of her five starts and was Group 1 placed again when third to Steps In Tim in the Coolmore Classic.
Last time out she raced in Brisbane and finished only a length off Cosmic Endeavour in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) on June 21, the 2014 Myer Classic-bound five-year-old boasting a top first-up record (6-4-1-0) she’ll be looking to add to on the weekend.
Also first-up and having enjoyed a strong season last time in is the Luke Price-trained Belle De Coeur in barrier five with Corey Brown aboard.
Trained in Nowra, the Show A Heart five-year-old ran top three in four of her five latest runs during her autumn – winter preparation including a third to Cosmic Endeavour in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm in June.
Other resuming mares include Scott Aspery’s Estonian Princess who won the Group 3 James Carr Stakes at Randwick in April and Neena Rock for John Sargent drawn at opposite ends of the field in barriers two and 11 respectively.
As for those coming off earlier form for the season there are two last start winners in the Team Hawkes-trained Maroon Bay with the outside draw here after a 1100m Rosehill win on August 30 and young Stratum filly Echo Gal for Gai Waterhouse also drawn wide with gate 13.
Echo Gal races in this after connections opted not to accept for the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) and shoots for her third win on the trot following back-to-back efforts at Canterbury a month apart.
My Sabeel is the other most notable acceptor, Kevin Moses’s veteran Savabeel seven-year-old having raced at Wyong last Friday when fifth to Bouzy Rouge in the Listed Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m).
Before that however she relished a bottomless Randwick track when defeating Bennetta in the Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m).
