Speediness Tops 2014 Bobbie Lewis Quality Field

Defending champion Speediness will line-up in Saturday’s Bobbie Lewis Quality 2014 field at Flemington looking to become just the second ever back-to-back of the sprint showdown.

Bon Hoffa secured successive editions of the race in 2007 and 2008 and now six years on trainer Colin Scott will look to do the same when he saddles-up his Testa Rossa seven-year-old Speediness in Saturday’s $150,000 Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m).

The gelding won the race first-up over Temple Of Boom before going on to run top four in his next four spring starts including a close third to Boban in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

This weekend Speediness resumes again having had a luckless run in the mud last time out on April 12 when 11th to Sacred Falls in the Group 1 Doncater Mile (1600m).

Last year he jumped from barrier 10 (of 18) and carried 56.5kg to victory with Craig Williams aboard in the Bobbie Lewis.

Twelve months on Speediness is again drawn wide this time in barrier 12 of 20 with Williams retaining the ride, the reigning champ however going up three kilos to carry the 59.5kg top weight.

That’s an equal weight also allocated to last year’s Bobbie Lewis runner-up, Tony Gollan’s Brisbane raider Temple Of Boom with the outside barrier to overcome this season.

Gate 20 was a notable blow for the Group 1 The Galaxy winner and jockey Tegan Harrison, eight-year-old Piccolo gelding Temple Of Boom also first-up here.

His latest two runs were at home during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, the veteran sprinter finishing runner-up to half-brother Spirit Of Boom in the Doomben 10,000 and then crossing a hair away from River Lad in the Stradbroke on June 7.

While the big weight and wide gate make it a tough resuming assignment for Temple Of Boom, Gollan is confident of a good spring ahead targeting the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on October 24 and the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) back at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.

“He will be top weight with 59.5kg and you have to say he is vulnerable but he is such a good straight horse that you couldn’t leave him out,” Gollan told Racingbase this week.

“He ran second to Speediness in the race last year second-up and he is going eveyr bit as good as that if not better this prep.”

The next heaviest weighted in the Bobbie Lewis Quality field with 57.5kg is then Peter Moody’s last start Group 3 The Heath 1100 winner Flamberge.

The Group 1 performed Exceed And Excel gelding has won his past two starts at Group 3 level and shoots for another sprint win here which would be his third from four starts at the track and distance.

Flamberge carried 58kg from barrier two in The Heath dropping in weight with another nice barrier (4) for the weekend.

The other last start winners in the mix are then the Jarrod Austin-trained Territory who won over 1200m at Rosehill on August 16, and the resuming pair Alma’s Fury and Akavoroun.

Ciaron Maher’s gelding Akavoroun hasn’t raced sicne July 12 when over the 1600m at Flemington he defeated the now 2014 Cox Plate bound Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner The Cleaner in the Winter Championship Final.

Alma’s Fury meanwhile is Gollan’s second runner, the Refuse To Bend gelding last seen winning back-to-back stakes races in Queensland back in June including the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) at the Sunshine Coast.

Other notable hopes include Randwick Guineas runner-up El Roca returning as a four-year-old here, the ultra-consistent Sistine Demon looking to atone for his only bad run to date in The Goodwood back in May and recent Show County Quality runner-up in Sydney In Cahoots.
