2014 Let’s Elope Stakes Field – Cockram Rematch

A rematch between the winner Gregers and a host of mares that finished behind her in the Cockram Stakes last start has been lined-up following the release of Saturday’s Let’s Elope Stakes 2014 field at Flemington Racecourse.

On August 30 at Caulfield the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Commands four-year-old Gregers made it back-to-back wins at the track for the month when taking out the Group 3 W.W. Cockram Stakes (1200m).

This weekend she gets the chance to add a third win for the season when she faces a similar field of rivals in the $200,000 Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) on Makybe Diva Stakes Day.

Jumping as Race 5 at 2:45pm this year’s edition of the mares-only showdown has attracted 10 final acceptors led by Gregers in barrier three with Craig Williams to ride.

She’s a three time winner form six starts at the track and is also well tried in Group 1 company most recently finishing fourth to Smokin’ Joey in Adelaide’s The Goodwood in May giving her the form, record and class to lead the Let’s Elope Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Also coming via the Cockram Stakes are then third placed Commanding Jewel and fifth past the post Dear Demi.

The Leon & Troy Corstens-trained three-quarter sister to Atlantic Jewel Commanding Jewel, in barrier seven on Saturday with Damien Oliver riding, returned to racing off a length injury enforced break in the Cockram.

There the reigning Let’s Elope Stakes winner was just half a length off the winner and on Saturday she looks to retain a flawless second-up record having won both of her starts two runs in to date.

Dear Demi for Clarry Conners meanwhile has barrier five in the Let’s Elope on the weekend with Jim Cassidy replacing Brad Rawiller.

The Dehere five-year-old, third to Fawkner in last year’s Caulfield Cup, is a classy staying type but hasn’t won a race since May last year in the Group 3 The Roses at Doomben.

The other headline Let’s Elope Stakes acceptor meanwhile is the returning Solicit from the local stables of Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra.

She’s drawn in barrier two with last year’s Cox Plate winning jockey Chad Schofield, back from a 27-meeting suspension, booked for the ride.

The Street Cry four-year-old races for the first time since a failed ninth in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes over the Randwick mile on April 19, before which she finished runner-up to this season’s Tramway winner Lucia Valentia in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill.

Solicit has an excellent first-up record and won over this track and distance by three lengths when resuming last time.

She’s also undefeated over the 1400m at Flemington, a record connections are hoping she can add to on the weekend despite giving away the fitness advantage to the Cockram runners.
