2014 Kingston Town Stakes Field Features La Amistad

Despite still being a chance to scratch out in favour of a run on firmer ground in Melbourne, the Team Hawkes-trained La Amistad is the headline acceptor for Saturday’s Kingston Town Stakes 2014 in Sydney.

The three-quarter sister to triple Melbourne Cup hero Makybe Diva is one of 15 hopefuls making up the final field for the $125,000 Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens this weekend.

Early $4.60 favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au to win the $400,000 Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Royal Randwick on October 4 before the Spring Cups in Melbourne, Redoute’s Choice mare La Amistad is drawn in barrier four on 55.5kg with James McDonald to ride.

That is if she runs in the Kingston Town on a likely wet track, connections also to accept for a non black-type at Flemington Racecourse on Makybe Diva Stakes Day where the ground could be more to her liking.

La Amistad resumed on August 21 at Hawkesbury and was third, with McDonald aboard, in the Listed Rowley Mile (1600m) but is tipped to improve as she gets back up in distance after she won the Listed McKell Cup (2400m) at Randwick during the winter.

The other chief Kingston Town Stakes acceptor for Saturday’s showdown is then the Gai Waterhouse-trained Greatwood drawn wider in barrier 12 with Tommy Berry booked to ride.

The in-form Manduro gelding was last seen defeating stable mate and fellow import Bonfire second-up in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) on a Heavy (9) Rosehill track on August 30.

Third in that race, the Chris Waller-trained He’s Your Man also backs up on Saturday.

In the Premier’s Cup Greatwood carried 54kg but goes up to 56kg on Saturday.

Former French-trained Cape Cross gelding He’s Your Man meanwhile, winner of the Listed Winter Challenge (1500m) two back at the track, carried 56.5kg in the Premier’s Cup and has the same on Saturday drawn one outside his last start conqueror in barrier 13.

Also with a wide draw in the outside barriers is the fellow Waller-trained Hoylonny (57.5kg) out to atone for an 11th in Premier’s Cup where the Lonhro six-year-old didn’t handle the wet ground.

Waller actually saddles up four chances in the Kingston Town Stakes field with his other two hopes being Opinion (58.5kg) and Lucky Chappy (55.5kg) drawn in barriers 10 and nine respectively.

Runner-up to current Melbourne Cup fancy The Offer in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) during the autumn, Oasis Dream gelding Opinion has had two runs this time in most recently beaten nearly six lengths in the Premier’s Cup.

Lucky Chappy meanwhile was ninth in a race stablemate and Theo Marks Stakes acceptor for Saturday Tougher Than Ever contested at the track over 1500m at the end of last month.

Kingston Town Stakes top weight this year meanwhile is the Ciaron Maher-trained Mr O’Ceirin with 59kg and Luke Nolen, who also has the ride on 2014 Golden Rose favourite Bring Me The Maid for Peter Moody at the meeting, riding from barrier five.

Runner-up in the Eagle Farm Cup during the winter the seven-year-old resumed with a fifth to Stipulate in the Listed Heatherlie Handicap (1700m) at Caulfield last month and has his first run at Rosehill on the weekend over a distance he’s got a great record over (9-5-1-0).

Along with Greatwood the only other last start winner in the mix is then Bede Murray’s rails-drawn World Wide, the veteran eight-year-old having thrived in the mud at Randwick last Saturday to win over the 2000m which he sees again here on the short back-up.

Other notable Kingston Town Stakes hopes then include the Brian Smith-trained Kingdoms (barrier 14) and the John Sargent-trained Iggi Bob in barrier three.
