Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A top class field of three-year-olds looking for less distance and a firmer track than on offer in the Golden Rose Stakes in Sydney this weekend is engaged to face off in the Danehill Stakes 2014 at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday.
While the feature 3YOs race of the weekend is the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens, a nice line-up will also take their spots in Melbourne’s $200,000 Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m).
Running as the sixth race on Flemington’s Makybe Diva Stakes Day program the Danehill Stakes field features 16 hopefuls led by returning filly Go Indy Go.
The Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained daughter of Bernardini prepares for her first run of the new season here following a stellar autumn that concluded with a Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) win at Randwick on April 26.
She’s in Melbourne for the first time here but ready for the challenge as she heads towards a run in the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 11 for which she’s the $5 favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au to win.
Due to be ridden by last year’s Cox Plate winning jockey Chad Schofield who returns from a 27-meeting suspension on Saturday, Go Indy Go has drawn ideally in barrier six.
That’s also the gate Saturday’s Golden Rose favourite Bring Me The Maid is allocated along with her stable mate Dissident, Peter Moody’s Memsie Stakes winner in barrier six for the $400,000 Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m).
Another top class runner who is first-up in the Danehill Stakes is the Chris Waller-trained Brazen Beau jumping from barrier four with Jim Cassidy to ride.
The I Am Invincible colt was last seen finishing runner-up to Gai Waterhouse’s Golden Rose hope Almalad in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) in Brisbane on June 7 and comes off a winning trial from September 2 in Sydney.
Brazen Beau could back-up in next month’s $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) if he looks like needing more ground, or could be kept to a sprint distance this spring targeting the $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) back at Flemington on November 1.
The shortest priced of his rivals in the Danehill Stakes field also among the first acceptors for the October 11 showdown meanwhile is Get The Nod ($11) followed by Rich Enuff ($15).
Lloyd Kennewell’s undefeated Adelaide visitor Get The Nod is drawn in barrier one with Mark Zahra to replace Joe Bowditch, the U S Ranger gelding coming off a first-up win in the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield in mid- August.
Rich Enuff is then drawn wide in barrier 13 with Michael Rodd to ride, Ken Keys’ Cranbourne based colt also a last start stakes winner having won the Listed McKenzie Stakes over 1200m at Moonee Valley on August 23.
Also on the Caulfield Cup path and looking to stake their claims in the Danehill are the likes of the John O’Shea-trained Group 2 Todman Stakes winner Ghibellines, Galaxy Pegasus who won at Geelong last month by seven lengths on debut and Tony Gollan’s returning JJ Atkins third placegetter Looks Like The Cat.
Another interesting edition is then the Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes-trained San Domenico Stakes winner Nostradamus who is also accepted for the Golden Rose but likely to opt for a run on firmer ground in the Danehill.
Other notable hopes include the Mick Price-trained McNeil Stakes runner-up Nordic Empire, San Domenico fourth placed Snitzel colt Wandjina for Gai Waterhouse and the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Awesome Rock.
