Caulfield Guineas Day features two Group 1 races for the first time this season with the fillies facing off in the Thousand Guineas and both sexes open to run in the $1 million Group 1 BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

This time last year there were 83 Caulfield Guineas first acceptors, over 20 more still in the mix for the 2014 edition of the mile classic.

Headlining the futures Caulfield Guineas odds and the first declarations is the Mark Kavanagh-trained Chivalry.

The Street Cry colt has been clear favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au for the Caulfield Guineas since beating home Nordic Empire (2nd) and Awesome Rock (3rd) first-up in the Group 3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 30.

Other Top 2014 Caulfield Guineas First Acceptors

  • Almalad (Gai Waterhouse) – JJ Atkins winner in the winter goes well over the mile but doesn’t handle the wet so will be better in Melbourne after running second-last on a Heavy track at Randwick first-up
  • Divan (Robert Hickmott) – Zabeel colt bred for races like this, ran third in the ANZAC Day Stakes on debut and returned at Sandown with a win over 1400m on August 27
  • Get The Nod (Lloyd Kennewell) – Adelaide-trained U S Ranger gelding is undefeated having won at home on debut in the autumn before a nice effort in the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield last month but needs to handle more distance
  • Hallowed Crown (James & Bart Cummings) – Undefeated Street Sense colt is a dual Group 3 winner but has won all three start and defeated Group 1 placed Kumaon first-up in a come from behind effort in te mud at Rosehill in the Run To The Rose
  • Better Land (Peter Moody) – Shamardal colt won on debut at Sale in April before a first-up second in The Rosebud then a luckless fourth in the Up & Coming Stakes he’ll be out to atone for in the Golden Rose after making the starting line-up
  • Brazen Beau (Chris Waller) – I Am Invincible colt last seen running second in the JJ Atkins, didn’t accept for the Golden Rose and will run in the Danehill in Melbourne instead over 1200m, if shows wants more goes to the Guineas if not the Coolmore in November will be the target
  • Rich Enuff (Ken Keys) – Cranbourne-based Written Tycoon colt won the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley last month but hasn’t proved they can stay yet

A number of the genuine Caulfield Guineas first acceptors will face off this Saturday in Sydney’s $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens including Almalad, the widely-drawn Hallowed Crown, the John O’Shea-trained Sarajevo to be ridden by James McDonald and Better Land who joins stable mate and race favourite Bring Me The Maid.

Other interesting inclusions include David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s seven length Geelong winner on debut Galaxy Pegasus, Gerald Ryan’s 2014 Victoria Derby hope Bachman, Golden Rose acceptor Nostradamus who is more likely to run in Melbourne’s Danehill Stakes on firmer ground and last start Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality Handicap winner Panzer Division.

There are also three fillies that are dually accepted for both the Caulfield and Thousand Guineas this year with Group 1 winner Peggy Jean and the Chris Waller-trained duo of Amicus and Winx who won the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) first-up last weekend.

Notable omissions at 2014 Caulfield Guineas first acceptance stage then include Meursault, Robbie Laing’s Boomwaa and the Mick Price-trained pair of Jabali and Nordic Empire.

The next declaration stage for the Caulfield Guineas is second acceptances closing on Tuesday September 23, 2014.

Until then why not check out the juicy futures markets on the upcoming Melbourne Group 1s open online now at the online bookie rewarding first time depositing players with a $250 bonus bet – Ladbrokes.com.au!
