Trainer Gerald Ryan could have as many as three chances in Saturday’s 2014 Golden Rose Stakes field including his Victoria Derby-bound colt Bachman.
Final acceptances for the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m), which kicks off Group 1 racing in Sydney for the season at Rosehill Gardens on the weekend, close at 9am on Tuesday morning.
There are 18 spots in the field and three of those could be filled by runners from Ryan’s local stables.
He is looking at an acceptance for his Snitzel filly Ygritte, beaten Ming Dynasty Quality favourite from last Saturday Washington Heights and also Bachman.
After a disappointing sixth to Panzer Division, Paul Messara’s Redoute’s Choice colt a 50-50 chance of running in the Group 1 on a seven day back-up, in the Group 3 race at Randwick over the weekend Ladbrokes.com.au removed Ryan’s Commands colt Washington Heights from their all-in Golden Rose odds.
He was a top fancy before the Ming Dynasty having run a first-up second behind Nostradamus in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on a firm track.
Ryan though is still debating whether to give Washington Heights, who didn’t handle the Heavy (9) Randwick track on Saturday, another shot in the Golden Rose.
“We are still weighing up our options with Washington Heights,” he told The Daily Telegraph.
Ygritte, last seen running third behind $4.60 second pick for the Rose Hallowed Crown when the James & Bart Cummings-trained colt made it three-from-three in the Group 3 The Run To The Rose (1200m) on August 30, and Bachman then pay $26 in Golden Rose betting.
The filly is, along with Peter Moody’s current $4.20 top fancy Bring Me The Maid and possibly the Gai Waterhouse-trained Echo Gal at the opposite end of the markets at $101, out to become the first female Golden Rose winner since Forensics in the autumn of 2008.
No filly has done it since the race was moved to the spring in 2009.
“Ygritte went really well in the Run To The Rose and she has improved since,” Ryan said.
Perhaps Ryan’s most interesting possibility in the Golden Rose though is Bachman.
The All American colt has won two of his five starts to date most recently beating Scratch Me Lucky by two and a half lengths after a charging finish in the Group 3 Schweppervescence (1400m) at Rosehill in the wet on Golden Slipper Day.
After that he was stepped up to a mile for the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) but was bumped by his stable mate at 600m mark and spat the bit out late resulting in a disappointing ninth to Go Indy Go.
Ryan has him earmarked for the $1.5 million Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on November 1 on the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival but is also keen to see how might go he over the 1400m first-up on Saturday.
“Bachman is more a (Victoria) Derby horse but he’s nice and fresh so it will be interesting to see how he goes,” the trainer said.
Singapore-based hoop Corey Brown has been booked by Ryan for the ride on Bachman while jockeys are still to be established for both Ygritte and Washington Heights with Brenton Avdulla on standby.
