2014 Makybe Diva Stakes Nominations Feature Dissident

Peter Moody’s first-up Memsie Stakes winner Dissident will shoot for back-to-back Group 1 wins in Melbourne this weekend as one of the headline nominees for what is shaping up to be a star studded edition of the Makybe Diva Stakes 2014.

Nominations for the $400,000 Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) have been extended until 10am on Tuesday and currently feature 13 hopefuls including Sebring stallion Dissident.

The four-year-old became a dual Group 1 winner when resuming at Caulfield on August 30, the reigning Randwick Guineas champ beating home a top field in an awesome two and a half length Memsie Stakes victory over 1400m.

He steps up to the mile then for Saturday’s clash and could be hard to hold out again despite it being his first look at the notoriously tight Moonee Valley circuit with Ben Melham retaining the ride.

Also coming via a run in the Memsie Stakes meanwhile are third placed Puissance De Lune, Boban (5th), Sertorius (5th), Messene (9th) who is also nominated for Sydney’s Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes on Saturday and the Mark Kavanagh-trained Super Cool (10th).

One time Melbourne Cup fancy from last spring, the Darren Weir-trained Puissance De Lune finished second to Foreteller in last year’s Makybe Diva Stakes and will be looking to go one better this spring.

Foreteller’s stablemate Boban meanwhile will be out to hand trainer Chris Waller with back-to-back wins in the weight-for-age feature as will the defending champ who comes off two nice runs this time in.

Dansili eight-year-old Foreteller was a first-up fourth to Star Rolling in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) in mid-August and then backed up last Saturday running a close third just over a length off the now Cox Plate-bound The Cleaner in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m).

Both Puissance De Lune and Boban are, like Dissident, heading towards a possible shot at another weight-for-age showdown – the classic $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley Racecourse on October 25.

Dissident is the shortest priced of the Makybe Diva Stakes nominations in early Cox Plate betting at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $21 followed by Boban, Puissance De Lune and former Australian Cup winner Super Cool all at $26.

Super Cool ran fifth in the Cox Plate last year before a ninth to Fiorente in the Melbourne Cup and is looking to atone for a Memsie Stakes 10th as a $51 outsider in betting.

Also resuming in the Makybe Diva Stakes are a number of Spring Cup hopes including the Robert Hickmott-trained, Lloyd Williams-owned duo of Fawkner and Green Moon.

Winner of last year’s Caulfield Cup Fawkner is at $26 to win the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) on the first Tuesday of November back at Flemington, a race the Reset gelding ran sixth in last spring.

Green Moon meanwhile was 21st in the Melbourne Cup last season but won the 2012 edition of the ‘race that stops a nation’.

Hickmott and Williams could have a total of three Makybe Diva Stakes representatives too having also nominated for Irish import Foundry coming off a 10th in the Dato.

Williams confirmed jockeys for only Green Moon and Fawkner however who will be ridden by last year’s Cox Plate winning hoop Chad Schofield returning form a 27-meeting suspension on Saturday and Nick Hall respectively.

Other notable hopes include PB Lawrence Stakes runner-up Spillway who won the Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m) back in April, and the aforementioned Jamie Edwards and Bruce Elkington-trained Sertorius who worked well on Saturday and who is due to gallop on the course proper at Geelong on Tuesday.

Sixth in the Memsie Stakes in his first run since finishing third to current Melbourne Cup favourite The Offer in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m), Sertorius will be ridden by Ryan Maloney in the Makybe Diva –  the hoop having scored the upset win over Lankan Rupee aboard Angelic Light in last weekend’s McEwen Stakes.
