Panzer Division Wins 2014 Ming Dynasty Quality Handicap – Golden Rose Next?

Paul Messara’s quality colt Panzer Division has set himself up for a possible 2014 Golden Rose run next Saturday after a smart win in the Ming Dynasty Quality Handicap at Royal Randwick today.

Showing plenty of greenness still the son of Redoute’s Choice beat home all but his stable mate Scissor Kick at the track on August 23 when beaten a nostril flare in the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) in the wet.

Today he handled another Heavy-rated Randwick track this time going one better to storm home with an emphatic victory in the $175,000 Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality Handicap (1400m).

“Today he’s bounced back and won the race clearly,” winning hoop Tye Angland said post-win.

Jumping aboard for his first ride on the three-year-old, Angland was replacing Kathy O’Hara today and the hoop was confident of better things to come from the Ming Dynasty winner.

“My horse will beat a 10-time better horse ridden quiet,” he said.

“He’s just so green…he’s got a lot of improvement to him.

“He’s a very nice horse.”

Panzer Division was drawn wide with the outside barrier in the nine horse field and Angland let him roll forward to take up front running from Valentina out wide in second.

It was an impressive all-the-way effort then as the front runner shrugged off his rivals with ease on the straight to beat home a fast finishing Shooting To Win, moved up from fourth earlier, by a length and a quarter.

From the back of the field then came the Team Hawkes-trained filly Lady Sharapova, a last start winner over 1250m at Canterbury a month ago, who was the same margin away again in third to finish off the Ming Dynasty trifecta.

The money had been on Panzer Division at the track and the punters were cheering over the dying stages as the well bcked winner charged home after an on-speed win.

Winning trainer Messara told TVN post-win that the bait was certainly there to back the horse up in seven days’ time with the riches of the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens now calling.

“The bait is certainly there,” he said.

“We’ll just have to see what the weather is doing too.

“We’ll just let the dust settle and go from there.”

Ming Dynasty Quality favourite Washington Heights meanwhile got too far back early, Gerald Ryan’s dual Group 3 runner-up never in the race.
