The field of Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup hopefuls head towards the spring majors via the 2014 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes this Saturday, betting tips and exotic selections for which are detailed below.
Due to jump as Moonee Valley Race 7 in Melbourne, this weekend’s $250,000 Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) features 11 hopefuls with surprise PB Lawrence Stakes winner Star Rolling topping the Ladbrokes.com.au markets.
The Casino Prince gelding is second-up for the season, the same as last year’s Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner Fiorente, and is looking to become the seventh favourite in 16 years to salute.
If he firms further in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes betting markets that would historically work in his favour too with 10 of the past 15 winners of the weight-for-age clash having started at $3.20 or shorter.
His main dangers in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes odds are then spruiked as cult Tasmanian galloper The Cleaner ($5) coming off a super consistent prep and the Chris Waller-trained Foreteller ($6.50) last seen running fourth to Star Rolling in the Group 2 Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 16.
So are the top three in betting also the gallopers you should be locking into your Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes selections?
Or is there value to be found further down the markets from the likes of the Peter Moody-trained Group 2 Blamey Stakes winner Lidari ($7.50), Mick Price’s German import Pakal ($8.50) or Robert Hickmott’s former European Foundry ($9.50)?
#9 Star Rolling ($4.40)
On paper this Casino Price five-year-old is the definite one to beat and history shows the favourites are the ones to back in this. Autumn form was hit and miss but did include a third to last year’s Dato winner Fiorente in the Peter Young Stakes. Was dead last behind the same horse in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) but will be better over a mile, is in somewhat easier company here and has a brilliant second-up record (3-2-1-0). History shows second-up is where a horse wants to be going into the Dato as well so everything looks right for this.
#4 The Cleaner ($5)
Always plenty of love for Mick Burles’ Savoire Vivre gelding and this time the money looks very justified. The seven-year-old comes off a lengthy prep already with four runs behind him where he has finished top two every time. History shows just two Dato winners in the past 25 years with more than two runs for the campaign behind them but there’s plenty else to like about this visitor from the Apple Isle. He jumps from last year’s winning barrier (2), comes off a last start win at the track and distance, is undefeated over the Moonee Valley mile, has a top Win Rate (39%) and second best Place Rate (68%). Out to defy history but could be good enough to do it.
#2 The Offer ($11)
Gai Waterhouse’s 2014 Melbourne Cup-bound Sydney Cup winner was out to $13 earlier in the week but money is starting to come and the stats back that up. While no horse has won the Dato first-up he is a genuine top three, or even top two, chance for sure from barrier six. Won three straight last time in including a four length romp over the two miles last time out so could find this a bit short. Waterhouse won this last year with Fiorente who went on to success on the first Tuesday of November however and she thinks this one can make it two on the trot in the Dato for her.
