Waterhouse Charge Leads 2014 Wyong Gold Cup Field

Ace Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse will saddle up four livewire chances in Friday’s Wyong Gold Cup 2014 field including two of the top fancies in the markets for the black-type clash.

Running as Race 7 at 4:35pm tomorrow, this year’s $150,000 Listed Carlton Mid Wyong Gold Cup (2100m) has drawn a final field of 14 hopefuls, all of which you can back stress free at Ladbrokes.com.au who are offering money back bonus bets up to $50 if your selection runs second!

Early favourite despite a wide barrier 10 draw is Waterhouse’s consistent Stratum mare Queenstown.

The five-year-old is after her second country cups win of the year following a Grafton Cup success over Secessio back in July.

She resumed racing at Rosehill on August 2 and finished fifth behind He’s Your Man in the Listed Winter Challenge Stakes (1500m) carrying 57kg.

This week she jumps back up to a more favourable distance and will carry 56kg with Tim Clark riding.

Waterhouse’s other headline Wyong Cup acceptor is then Travolta drawn one on Queenstown’s inside in barrier nine with one of Sydney’s top jockeys Tommy Berry to ride.

The Handsome Ransom gelding also ran in July’s Grafton Cup finishing fourth to his stablemate.

The Kiwi import was also fourth in the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) behind Who Shot Thebarman, now with four time Sydney premiership winning trainer Chris Waller, back in March.

First-up this time in the six-year-old ran sixth when defeated just over a length in a top run behind Mr Chard in the Listed Rowley Mile (1600m) at Hawkesbury last month.

That’s an effort Travolta should be improving on this weekend as the dour stayer goes up in distance.

Travolta is one of two equal 59kg top weights in the Wyong Gold Cup field this year along with the Joe Pride-trained Destiny’s Kiss.

Winner of the Stayers Cup over the two miles at Randwick back in June, Power Of Destiny six-year-old Destiny’s Kiss also comes off a resuming run in the Rowley Mile having finished fifth a nose in front of Travolta and only 1.1 lengths off the winner which had a five kilo weight advantage.

Waterhouse’s two other chances in Friday’s feature race are then European import Michelangelo in the outside barrier (14) which ran third in the 2012 Group 1 Doncaster St Leger and recent Rosehill winner over 2000m Laidback Larry drawn at the opposite end of the field with gate one.

Along with Waterhouse the other best represented trainer in the Wyong Cup this year is Sydney’s best – Chris Waller.

Waller has three in the mix, the best fancied of which is Multilateral in barrier 11 with James McDonald riding on the 54kg minimum.

The Mizzen Mast gelding has been racing consistently in Sydney over the past few months and was most recently seen running fifth to Hoylonny over 1800m at Rosehill in mid-August when carrying 56kg.

Waller’s two other hopes are then Winter Cup winner and Grafton Cup runner-up Secessio (barrier 13, 56.5kg), and Sydney Cup fourth placegetter Brigantin (barrier 5, 58.5kg) out to improve on a distant 10th when failing to beat home any runners in the Rowley Mile first-up.

It should be a pretty open market for the Wyong Cup this year with a number of other genuine hopes including John Thompson’s Chairman’s Handicap runner-up behind current Melbourne Cup favourite The Offer Tremec, Destiny’s Kiss’s stable mate Canny Ballad, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Disclaimer and Evangelist for Tony McEvoy.
