Unsurprisingly Mick Price’s champion sprint star Lankan Rupee has opened odds-on favourite in the 2014 McEwen Stakes betting markets for his race return in Melbourne this weekend.
Running as Moonee Valley Race 5 at 2:45pm (AEST) on Saturday this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Mitty’s McEwen Stakes (1000m) features nine hopes including Price’s triple Group 1 winner Lankan Rupee.
Currently the world’s highest rated sprinter the son of Redoute’s Choice is undefeated in his past six starts that included four from four in the autumn and three elite level victories.
Last start the now five-year-old was seen beating Rebel Dane by an easy two lengths in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick in the wet, Saturday to be his third run at Moonee Valley.
Paying a short $1.26 through Ladbrokes.com.au to win first-up and kick off another ace campaign, the gelding worked out at Moonee Valley on Tuesday with an eye-catching run that left Price bullish over his chances on Saturday.
Lankan Rupee last raced at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day last October and suffered a rare defeat when third, beaten only half a length, after over-racing in a 955m Benchmark 84 after which he pulled up with thumps.
Since then he’s remained undefeated and his Melbourne triumphs include the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate – Newmarket Handicap double.
The only other runner under double figures in the McEwen Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au to score a massive upset is then Eloping at $9.
Peter Morgan & Craig Widdison’s Choisir filly gets a massive weight advantage on Lankan Rupee under the weight-for-age conditions of the race carrying 50kg to his 58.5kg.
She jumps from barrier two with Linda Meech in the saddle, the three-year-old first-up after a fourth last time out behind Brazen Beau in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben on May 10.
Before that she was beating them home at Randwick in the Group 3 Keith MacKay Stakes (1200m) with Saturday her first look at the notoriously tight Moonee Valley circuit.
The next best in McEwen Stakes betting are then early market mover Unpretentious ($12) who ran third in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes on the back of a Newmarket ninth behind Lankan Rupee in March, Kiwi four-year-old Cauthen ($14) who beat subsequent Cox Plate winner Shamus Award home at Moonee Valley last August and Godolphin up-and-comer Orujo ($16).
