Entirely Platinum Leads 2014 Chelmsford Stakes Odds

After a last start win at Rosehill and Group 3 winning form from the autumn the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Entirely Platinum has opened favourite to keep the nice form going with a win in Saturday’s Chelmsford Stakes 2014.

The Pentire gelding is the top fancy in a star-studded field of Group 1 performers facing off in the $175,000 Group 2 Tattersalls Club Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick on the weekend.

A springboard to the upcoming majors of the Sydney and Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the Chelmsford Stakes is shaping up as a crack race.

The bookies are taking no chances with five-year-old Entirely Platinum who pays $3.30 sitting top of the Chelmsford Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Drawn in barrier seven with James McDonald to ride, the galloper is looking to earn a Group 1 assignment this season having been nominated for all the majors.

Winner of the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill back in March, Entirely Platinum returned to racing on August 16 to win the Canterbury Hursltone RSL Handicap (1400m) also at Rosehill.

He jumped awkwardly and ran wide throughout but impressed when finishing strongly showing promise ahead of a possible campaign targeting the $400,000 Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) back at Randwick on October 4.

In early The Metropolitan betting Entirely Platinum is installed as the $8 second pick behind La Amistad, and will likely firm into favouritism with a victory over a crack field on Saturday.

In a tight market four of Entirely Platinum’s eight rivals are also under $10 to win with:

  • #9 Royal Descent ($4.20) – One of six for Chris Waller who dominates the Chelmsford Stakes field, the ATC Oaks winner is the market mover having been backed in from $4.60. She has the rails run from barrier one with Kerrin McEvoy to ride the daughter of Redoute’s Choice who ran a stellar second to Tiger Tees in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at this track last time out. Loves Randwick (7-2-3-1) and has finished runner-up in all three over her runs over a mile to date including behind stablemate Sacred Falls in the Doncaster Mile. Also a dual runner-up at the track and distance and loves a wet track.
  • #8 Criterion ($5) – David Payne-trained Group 1 Rosehill Guineas winner that also won over the mile and a half when making it a Group 1 double in the autumn with a victory in the ATC Derby. Is in the mix for the Caulfield Cup after a first-up third in the Warwick Stakes but is more likely to go to the Cox Plate over 2040m under WFA conditions on October 25. Son of Sebring runs second-up and will be competitive on any ground, could be looking for more distance but Randwick record is good and is a class four-year-old.
  • #1 Sacred Falls ($5.50) – Waller’s dual Doncaster Mile champion loves a mud track but has also won on Good going so is another versatile runner that can perform on all courses. O’Reilly five-year-old is second-up and looking for his third win from six second-up starts here on the back of a close fourth in the Warwick Stakes which looks the form line to follow. Distance is ideal and he is obviously proven over the 1600m at Randwick.
  • #3 Hawkspur ($8) – Another from the Waller stables this former Queensland Derby winner hasn’t finished in the money for a while but was far from disgraced when fourth in both the Ranvet Stakes and Doncaster Mile in the autumn. Has had two runs this time in and is improving off those, the most recent of which was a fifth – still under two lengths beaten – in the Warwick Stakes. Slow track will play into the hands of this Purrealist gelding (3-2-1-0) but not sure if the mile or the Randwick track will bring out his best.

Outside of the single figure hopes the market opens right up with the next best in betting being Waller’s veteran Easy Rocking eight-year-old Bagman ($26) shooting for his third win on the trot after wins at Moonee Valley (2040m) and Caulfield (2000m) last month.
