Waller Dominates 2014 Chelmsford Stakes Field

Four-time Sydney premiership winning trainer Chris Waller dominates Saturday’s Chelmsford Stakes 2014 field at Randwick Racecourse saddling up nearly 70% of runners in the weight-for-age feature.

There are nine gallopers set to face off in this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Tattersalls Club Chelmsford Stakes (1600m), six of which are prepared by Waller.

Heading the line-up with the number one saddlecloth is Sacred Falls, a dual Doncaster Mile winner and known mudlark.

The O’Reilly stallion returned to racing on a Heavy (9) Randwick track on August 23 but a luckless run saw him finish just over one and a half lengths away fourth to the Joe Pride-trained winner Tiger Tees.

With a step up to a mile on Saturday Sacred Falls should be finishing closer having won two of his four starts over the track and distance.

Best over the line in the Warwick Stakes for Waller meanwhile was his former Oaks winner Royal Descent who also backs up in the Chelmsford.

Drawn on the rails in barrier one with Kerrin McEvoy aboard this weekend, the Redoute’s Choice mare was runner-up in the Warwick Stakes and has had three previous runs over the mile finishing second in all three including behind her stablemate in last year’s Doncaster Mile.

Waller’s other Warwick Stakes graduate in the mix again this weekend is past Queensland Derby winner Hawkspur, the now five-year-old Purrealist gelding having run fifth.

Hawkspur has never won first-up however and so should have taken nice improvement from the run, the stayer better suited to the longer distanced races coming up this spring.

Also coming off a first-up fifth for the stable is Clodovil seven-year-old Moriarty, the veteran gelding having finished three and a half lengths off the short priced favourite and winner Terravista in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200M) from August 23.

Moriarty may be getting on in the years but he was in top form during the winter including a Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) victory over Mr O’Ceirin on May 31 and is another that will be appreciating more metres.

Waller’s contingent also features eighth placed Show County Quality runner Junoob who was third in the Group 1 Doomben Cup over 2000m behind Streama in May and the in-form Bagman.

The oldest of Waller’s Saturday runners, eight-year-old Bagman comes off back-to-back Melbourne wins most recently over 2000m at Caulfield on August 16 and so must handle a change to the Sydney way of racing and a drop back in distance too.

Also coming off a win and seeking more success is the promising Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Group 3 winner Entirely Platinum.

Drawn wide in gate seven with James McDonald to ride, the up-and-comer has won four of his past five runs including a first-up success over 1400m at Rosehill on August 16.

Finishing off the Chelmsford Stakes field in gate eight for David Payne is then Group 1 Rosehill Guineas – ATC Derby champ Criterion.

The four-year-old Sebring stallion was first-up in the Warwick Stakes running a brave third over an unsuitably short distance and could be hard to beat second-up over the mile.

His last look at the distance was a disappointing eighth to subsequent Memsie Stakes winner Dissident in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) but the run before he was runner-up behind Cox Plate hero Shamus Award in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington.
