Just seven three-year-old fillies are accepted to face off in the Furious Stakes 2014 at Royal Randwick this weekend with John O’Shea’s Blue Diamond Stakes winner Earthquake scaring a number of potential rivals away.
There are five Group status events on the Sydney race card on Saturday including some quality lead-up races for three-year-olds heading towards the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne next month.
One possible 2014 Thousand Guineas-bound filly, and current favourite at $5 through Ladbrokes.com.au in the futures markets for the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival classic, is the Godolphin-owned Earthquake.
The daughter of Exceed And Excel boasts four wins from five starts to date, including the Group 1 Blue Diamond at Caulfield in February, with her only loss being a second to Mossfun in the Golden Slipper on April 5.
Earthquake was originally to have resumed racing in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) on August 23, however connections scratched her from the event due to a Heavy-rated Randwick track.
Sydney tracks remain rain-affected but with Randwick back in the Slow range there is every chance Earthquake will be running and winning the Furious Stakes as the odds-on favourite.
She’s drawn in barrier three with Kerrin McEvoy to ride and is joined in the Furious Stakes field by stablemate Memorial.
The fellow O’Shea-trained filly has barrier two and James McDonald in the saddle, the daughter of Street Cry coming via the Silver Shadow.
That day Memorial handled a mud track well to finish second behind Golden Slipper third placegetter Bring Me The Maid, form she’ll look to hold when coming up against her highly spruiked stable mate on Saturday.
The other Group 1 winner in the mix is then drawn in barrier four with Blake Shinn booked to ride the Gerald Ryan-trained Peggy Jean.
Also first-up here like Earthquake, the Myboycharlie filly hasn’t raced since a fifth behind Go Indy Go in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on April 26.
Before that she was runner-up to Bring Me The Maid in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill and first past the post when defeating the boys in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.
She’s got a nice Rosehill record with two wins from three starts, is a winner at the track and distance and should run well fresh ahead of a big spring.
Also coming via a resuming run in the Silver Shadow Stakes is fourth placed Alpha Miss for Warwick Farm’s Gary Nickson, the daughter of Lucky Owners having improved on her 14th in the Golden Slipper following a nice spell.
There are then two last start winners in the mix with the undefeated Chris Waller-trained Winx (barrier seven) and the Bart & James Cummings-trained Victorian visitor Sultry Feeling.
Street Cry filly Winx has won both of her two starts to date, most recently over 1400m at Rosehill on June 28 and is first-up here on the back of a third in a 840m Kensington trial on August 23 where Peggy Jean crossed third.
Sultry Feeling meanwhile has form around these fillies having run third in the Magic Night Stakes last prep, the Encosta De Lago filly resumed on August 20 and won over 1100m at Canterbury ahead of a class rise here.
Rounding out the field with the inside barrier is then the rails-drawn Sailing Past on debut for John Sargent on the back of four trials from November through until last month.
