Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
An impressive field of 17 runners have been nominated for an appearance in this weekend’s featured Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley Racecourse, highlighted by some of the spring season’s most exciting prospects.
Claiming early favouritism for the Melbourne Cup on the back of several impressive performances through the 2014 Autumn Carnival, trainer Gai Waterhouse has nominated The Offer for a racing return in the 2014 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes.
Contesting six wins and five minor places from 17 competitive starts so far, The Offer began his racing career under the guidance of leading British trainer Aidan O’Brien before transferring to the care of Waterhouse at the conclusion of 2012.
Steadily building to a win in the Listed Ballarat Cup (2200m) in his maiden Australian year, The Offer has returned to racing in 2014 in exceptional form; overcoming a forgettable run for sixth in a minor over 1400m on March 1st with third in the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) and three exceptional race wins back-to-back in the Group 3 NE Manion Cup (2400m), Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) and Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) most recently on April 19th.
Confirmed to target both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups this time in, Waterhouse and jockey Tommy Berry have been pleased with the building form of the Montjeu gelding and are expecting a strong first-up performance in the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes.
Trainer Chris Waller is set to be offered a great chance of success in the 2014 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes, nominating all of Foreteller, Hawkspur, Royal Descent and Sacred Falls for this weekend’s Moonee Valley feature.
Securing ten wins and a further six minor places from 43 competitive starts, Foreteller was a notable performer over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, breaking through for an impressive victory in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) most notably.
Performing well through autumn without being able to secure another race win, the Dansili returned to the races for fourth amongst classy competition in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) on August 16th and appears primed for another strong campaign.
Touted as one to watch over the 2013 spring after charging home to win the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) earlier in the year, Hawkspur was unable to live up to the hype that seemed to follow his campaign everywhere; fading to finish a disappointing 20th in the Melbourne Cup.
While also unable to secure another race win over autumn, the Purrealist gelding finished third in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) and fourth in both the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) most notably, and has steadily built to the task over two Group 2 starts this time in already.
Finishing second in the Doncaster Mile most notably over four autumn starts, Royal Descent took out the 2013 edition of the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) and finished a credible fifth in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).
Returning for second in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) on August 23rd, the Redoute’s Choice mare has also been included in nomination for the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Sydney’s Royal Randwick this weekend, along with Sacred Falls.
Successfully defending his 2013 Doncaster Mile crown when winning the event again in April, Sacred Falls returned to the spelling paddock after finishing second to It’s A Dundeel in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on April 19th, returning to racing for fourth in the Warwick Stakes on August 23rd.
Last start winner Star Rolling has also been included in nominations for the 2014 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes and is expected to be accepted into a final field of 15 and barrier draw, due to be released on Wednesday morning.
