Morgan Confident of Cox Plate Success for Star Rolling

An impressive first-up winner in the featured Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 16th, trainer Peter Morgan has revealed he remains confident in a standout spring campaign leading into the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) for classy gelding Star Rolling.

Jumping from the gates well, Star Rolling settled in ideal position during the running of the P.B. Lawrence, finding a clear line upon reaching the final straight and sprinting well enough to withstand a late charge from talented import Spillway.

Having raced at Moonee Valley just once competitively; a disappointing eleventh in the Sportingbet Handicap (1200m) in August last year, Morgan told The Herald Sun the Casino Prince gelding has performed well in countless track gallops at the Victorian track.

“I couldn’t tell you how many times he’s been there, whether for a gallop or accompanying a stable mate at the races” Morgan said.

“But I can tell you he loves the place. I can assure you no horse gallops better at the Valley than Star Rolling, hence the Cox Plate is the race we’re after.”

Watching on as several leading 2014 Cox Plate fancies contested the spring’s first Group 1 race, Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday, Morgan said he remains confident his stable’s star is a genuine chance of success.

“I’m still confident I’ve got the right horse. Silent Achiever ran well, maybe one or two others,” Morgan added.

“It’s a Cox Plate; just because the good horses maybe don’t look like they are around, they are around, don’t worry. Something might emerge out of the woodwork, who knows.”

Securing a commendable total of five race wins and two minor places from just 12 competitive starts so far, Star Rolling contested a largely consistent four race preparation through the 2014 Autumn; finishing a fighting fifth in the Listed John Dillon Stakes (1400m) first-up before claiming a close second in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) and third in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m); returning to the paddock after failing to beat a single running home in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) on March 8th. is currently offering the best odds on the 2014 Cox Plate, for which Star Rolling is available at a particularly generous quote of $41 for success.
