Hallowed Crown Undefeated After Run To The Rose Win

James & Bart Cummings’ exciting spring prospect Hallowed Crown kicked off exactly where he left off with a Group 3 win first-up at Rosehill Gardens today in The Run To The Rose looking spot on for the 2014 Golden Rosein a fortnight.

The Gooree Stud-owned Street Sense colt went out a two-from-two winner as a juvenile including a last start victory on a Heavy (9) Randwick track defeating the also very promising Washington Heights in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) back in April.

Today he kicked off his three-year-old prep and came back in sensational style with an ultra-impressive win in the $125,000 Group 3 MTA NSW Run To The Rose (1200m).

Markets at Ladbrokes.com.au on the three-year-olds’ clash were led by Gai Waterhouse’s returning Group 1 JJ Atkins winner Almalad and the Hawkes-trained Nostradamus whose connections opted to run him on the mud track in Sydney as opposed to the firmer ground in Melbourne today.

It was that rain-affected track that worked to Hallowed Crown’s advantage too with the known mudlark thriving in the conditions with Joshua Parr in the saddle.

Gerald Ryan’s filly Ygritte was away quick from the gates and was right up on the pace set by the Chris Waller-trained Sniper Fire while Nostradamus settled third and Almalad sat fourth on the outside a neck away.

On the run home Nostradamus was trying to push off the fence and looked to be struggling to let down on the soft track, pushing Almalad out of the way at the top of the straight with the favourite only beating home one other runner in the end.

With 300m to go eventual last-past-the-post Sniper Fire held top spot still from Ygritte before Hallowed Crown ($7) and Parr unleashed a powerful late burst to come home strong right down the outside.

Storming past his competition on the line he had three quarters of a length to spare on the John O’Shea-trained Kumaon ($14) who was last seen running third to Go Indy Go in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) over the mile at Randwick on April 26.

Ygritte ($11) then held on for third after a nice on speed run to round out The Run To The Rose trifecta.

Hallowed Crown is now three from three and has improvement to come after a dynamic first-up win that had co-trainer James Cummings very excited about the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) back at the track on September 13.

“He’s going to just take a nice little two weeks into the Golden Rose now,” Cummings said post-win.

“That was an electric turn of foot.

“A very bright star this horse.”

Cummings also said that a stallion career at stud was likely for this horse, especially if he went on to win the Golden Rose in two weeks’ time.

“Hopefully Mr Cojuangco will be happy,” he said.

“We’ve got a colt that potentially could be his next stallion.

“We’re going to get pretty excited I think over the next couple of weeks.”

The Run To The Rose result is sure to see Hallowed Crown jump to the top of the Ladbrokes.com.au Golden Rose odds too, especially after the luckless run of the former favourite Almalad.

Of course Cummings is in partnership with his legendary grandfather who, in the twilight of his career, has another very nice horse heading to the spring Group 1s.

“Very impressive,” was the winning jockey Parr’s post-race report.

“He’s really nice to sit on and showed a brilliant turn of foot.

“They’ve got an exciting horse and they deserve it.”
