2014 Memsie Stakes Day Scratchings & Track Report

Today the opening Group 1 meeting of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, and the 2014/15 Australian Racing Season, lights up Caulfield Racecourse with a bumper nine-race card for Memsie Stakes Day 2014.

Despite a bog track in Sydney causing early spring preparation chaos, in Victoria traditions are perfect for racing with sunny skies and a firm Good (3) track for today’s features.

Caulfield Track Report

  • Weather: Fine
  • Track Conditions: Good (3)
  • Penetrometer: 5.21
  • Rail: +6 Entire Circuit
  • Previous Rail: Out 3m Entire Circuit (16/08/2014)

Of the nine Memsie Stakes Day races on the program, five hold black-type status including the day’s marquee race.

This year’s $400,000 Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes (1400m) runs as Caulfield Race 8 at 4:40pm this afternoon and features 11 weight-for-age gallopers.

Heading the Memsie Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is Chris Waller’s market mover Boban who can be had at $3.50 with Ladbrokes offering money back if your horse runs second up to $50 as a bonus bet this afternoon!

Waller has expressed some concerns about the 1400m being a bit short today with a mile where the three time Group 1 winning Bernardini six-year-old does his best racing.

The punters though aren’t fazed and have smashed the gelding in Memsie Stakes betting.

The opening Group race on the program meanwhile runs as Race 5 at 2:45pm with the $150,000 Group 3 theshark.com.au Stakes (1100m), registered as The Heath 1100 where John Sadler’s sprint specialist Vain Queen ($3.80) is the favourite.

Out of The Heath field are Broken and Mister Milton leaving a final field of 13 older sprinters.

The three-year-olds are then next on the card with Race 6 at 3:25 being the $150,000 Group 3 H.D.F. McNeil Stakes (1200m).

In that a host of Golden Rose and Caulfield Guineas hopes strut their stuff and the current favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au to win today paying $5 is Shea Eden’s lightly raced Written Tycoon filly Novel Dancer.

That follows the early withdrawal of the would have been shortie Nostradamus, the Hawkes-trained Group 3 San Domenico Stakes winner racing in Sydney instead in The Run To The Rose.

The last of the Group races in Melbourne then runs as Caulfield Race 7 at 4:00pm on the dot with 11 mares left in the $150,0000 Group 3 Sportingbet Sprint Series Heat 1 Stakes (1200m), registered as the WW Cockram Stakes, after the scrathcings of #4 Scandiva and #9 Members Joy.

Leading the Cockram markets at a firm $2.70 is the David Hayes-trained Gregers coming off a win over the 1100m here on August 16.

Closing the card, Race 9 is then the day’s fifth stakes race with a full field of 15 lining up in the $120,000 Listed Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock Stakes (1700m).

Also known as the Slickpix Stakes markets on the last in Melbourne today are led by Marksmanship ($5.50), Ciaron Maher’s Galileo seven-year-old after his fourth on the trot.

See below for the full Caulfield scratchings.

Then for the best odds on all the day’s events visit Ladbrokes.com.au – the Aussie bookie offering money back on the Memsie Stakes if your first fixed win bet on the Group 1 finishes second best today!
