2014 Memsie Stakes Betting Update

Group 1 racing for the new season kicks off at Caulfield Racecourse this weekend with the Memsie Stakes 2014 and the money is coming hard and fast for the favourite Boban.

Due to jump at 4:40pm (AEST) as Race 8 in Melbourne today the full 11 final acceptors for the $400,000 Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes (1400m) are still in the mix with no scratchings from the day’s feature race.

Earlier in the week when Ladbrokes.com.au, who offer a Memsie Stakes money back bonus bet up to $50 if your horse runs second today, opened the Chris Waller-trained Boban as the $6.50 favourite.

A three-time Group 1 winner and four time winner over the 1400m, the Bernardini gelding comes off a first-up fourth to Sweet Idea in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m).

He missed last Saturday’s Warwick Stakes in Sydney due to the wet but the punters are loving him for Plan B in the Memsie with his odds now right into $3.50.

Racing at his best over 1400m – 1600m the step up to this range will suit, and he’s proven at weight-for-age and at the track so that’s two big ticks.

His Missile Stakes run was luckless and really he should have won, but with only three quarters of a length separating him from the winner after things didn’t go his way, Boban has the chance to atone here and will be hard to beat.

Money has also been steady for second pick in the Memsie Stakes odds with the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Messene in from $5 to $4.

Drawn ideally in barrier four with Dwayne Dunn to ride this six-year-old son of Lonhro has a super consistent record with nine wins from 14 starts, loves the distance boasting three wins and a second from four 1400m starts and also comes via the Missile.

He ran second that day and going up to 1400m should be closer, plus his second-up record is imposing with three wins and a second form four goes so will be a fighting finish.

Former third favourite Moment Of Change meanwhile has been part of a Memsie Stakes betting drift and is now out to $6.50 after a $4.80 opening price.

Peter Moody’s galloper is a 1400m specialist at Caulfield being undefeated in four runs over the track and distance.

Included in that are three Group 1 victories, the six-year-old out to make it a four here.

His first-up run was a second behind Hard Stride in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) a fortnight ago where he lumped 62kg to give the winner an eight kilo weight advantage.

There is a lot to like about this weight-for-age star and he’ll be fitter second-up, plus his on-pace style is going to suit the predicted walking speed in this so the drifting price is definitely worth a look in.

The third line of Memsie Stakes odds then are now led by Sweet Idea who, along with Boban, has been smashed by the punters.

She opened at a juicy $9.50 despite having beaten a number of these home in the Missile but has since been made much safer currently paying $6.

Gai Waterhouse’s Snitzel mare took her first-up record to three from four last time out but faces a tougher test here under weight-for-age conditions.

While she is a Group 1 runner-up when second to Steps In Time in the Coolmore in March, the four-year-old will have a tougher time here in her Melbourne debut over more distance with the pressure on.

The next best in betting at double figures now is then current Cox Plate favourite Silent Achiever out from $9.50 to $10 followed by the rails-drawn Puissance De Lune ($11) and Moody’s Randwick Guineas winner Dissident ($15).

The biggest drifter in the markets then has been Happy Trails right out to $21 after sitting at $16 earlier in the week.

Runner-up in last year’s Cox Plate, Paul Beshara’s Good Journey seven-year-old has barrier two and Michael Rodd riding but is likely looking for further than the 1400m which he’s yet to win over.

Also second-up record isn’t great and usually peaks at the end of a prep with punters shying away from last year’s Memsie Stakes seventh placegetter.

See below for the latest Memsie Stakes 2014 odds, prices you can lock in now at Ladbrokes.com.au stress free knowing if your horse is second past the post you will get your money back up to $50 as a bonus bet!
