Dear Demi Primed for Cockram Stakes Resumption

A notable performer over major races through the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, trainer Clarry Conners has revealed he is thrilled with the form of Group 1-winning mare Dear Demi ahead of her resumption in this weekend’s Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Securing a commendable total of six wins and 12 minor places from 33 competitive starts so far, Dear Demi has not been seen at the races since finishing a disappointing eighth in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on Day 2 of The Championships on April 19th.

Without doubt producing her most convincing autumn performance when third in the Group 3 Wiggle Stakes (1400m) first-up on March 8th, Conners told AAP jockey James McDonald had given Dear Demi a glowing report after partnering the five-year-old in two strong barrier trials and trackwork, and believes she will find career-best form through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, beginning with the Group 3 Cockram Stakes.

“James McDonald rode her in both her trials and he said that’s the best she has ever felt and the keenest she has ever felt. So I hope he’s right,” Conners said.

“I think she’s come back better than ever.”

Initially geared towards a first-up appearance at Randwick Racecourse last weekend, Conners removed the Dehere mare after the greater Sydney Metropolitan area received days of rain in the lead-up to the weekend, severely softening the running surface.

“We always had this race marked down as a backstop in case something went wrong with the first one,” Conners added of the Cockram Stakes.

A standout from her very first appearance on course in the spring of 2011, Dear Demi performed to a particularly high standard over the 2012 racing calendar; finishing second to Pierro in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) most notably through autumn and returning in spring for race wins in both the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m).

Continuing to build in class and form through 2013, the mare out of Shirley won the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) and Group 3 The Roses (2000m) and returned in spring for third in both the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) and Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) and second in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) most notably.
