Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A capacity field of 16 plus three emergencies have been confirmed to line up for this weekend’s Listed Heatherlie Handicap (1700m) at Caulfield Racecourse, offering punters exceptional value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning bet.
Running on to finish seventh in the Canterbury Hurlstone RSL Handicap (1400m) first-up on August 16th, Trade Commissioner has opened as and maintained status as outright favourite for success in the 2014 Heatherlie Handicap, currently available at odds of $7 ahead of Brambles and Mr O’Ceirin, currently sharing the second line of betting at $7.50 odds.
Will Trade Commissioner justify favouritism and win the 2014 Heatherlie Handicap, or will one of his talented rivals find the line in the clear?
Mr O’Ceirin ($7.50)
A strong performer over major events through the 2014 Autumn and Winter Carnivals, Mr O’Ceirin is more than worth consideration for a wager at current odds of $7.50. Overcoming a forgettable run for eleventh in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) when charging home to finish second to champion mare Streama in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on May 5th, the Postponed gelding was unlucky to be blocked for a run and seventh in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 17th, but responded well when running on for second in the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) just two weeks later. Confirmed to target both the Group 1 Metropolitan (2400m) and Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) this time in, Mr O’Ceirin’s class is likely to count for a lot in the 2014 Heatherlie Handicap.
Yet to appear on track in 2014, Araldo arguably offers punters the best value for money of any runner confirmed for the 2014 Heatherlie Handicap, and is more than worth consideration for a bet this weekend. Contesting an impressive record of four win and five minor places from just 12 competitive starts so far, the High Chaparral entire performed to a high standard over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival; finishing third in both the Listed Penang Trophy (1800m) and Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) and winning the Listed Bart Cummings (2520m) most notably. While allocated the relatively wide and awkward barrier 12, Araldo’s chances of first-up success took a huge boost when veteran jockey Glen Boss was confirmed to take the ride.
Masked Marvel ($15)
Yet to be seen at the races in 2014, Masked Marvel contesting last year’s edition of the Group 1 Melbourne Cup, but was unable to match the late pace of eventual champion Fiorente. Entered in nominations for several feature races through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, the Montjeu entire has been confirmed to be partnered by leading jockey Craig Williams and is more than a chance of success this weekend if in ideal racing position leading into the final straight.
