Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Confirming the talented five-year-old for the season’s first Group 1 earlier this weekend, trainer Mark Kavanagh is confident Super Cool will perform well in the featured Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday, but conceded a win may be a little out of reach at this stage.
Contesting a commendable total of four wins and five minor places from just 15 competitive race starts so far, Super Cool is yet to appear on track competitively in 2014, having finished a credible ninth in the 2013 Melbourne Cup (3200m) most recently.
Pleased with the building form of the Fastnet Rock gelding, Kavanagh said he does not think Super Cool has reached peak condition, but is confident he will register a strong run and hit the line hard in the 2014 Memsie Stakes.
“He hasn’t raced since last spring and he’s nowhere near as forward as he was last year,” Kavanagh told Racing Victoria.
“With this race going to a Group 1, you’ve got some 1400-metre specialists going there.
“He would need a run, maybe two before he does anything. But he’ll probably finish it off strong out in the middle somewhere.
“He’s nowhere near cranked up yet, so he’ll improve on what he does.”
Performing to a high standard in each of his racing campaigns since first debuting on course in the late autumn of 2012, Super Cool stamped his claims as one to watch through his first Spring Racing Carnival; finishing fourth in the Listed Vintage Stakes (1400m) early and continuing to build towards a win in the Group 3 Mitchelton Wines Vase and second in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m).
Returning in 2013 in career-best form to date, the gelding out of Queen Mother finished third in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) first-up before claiming back-to-back victories in the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) and Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m).
Performing well over six starts despite being unable to secure another race win through the 2013 Spring Carnival, Super Cool is currently available at generous odds of $34 for success in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes, or $8.30 to run a place.
