Jewel’s Form Commanding of Cockram Stakes Resumption

Missing nearly a year of racing after suffering an unfortunate run of injuries, co-trainer Troy Corstens has confirmed Commanding Jewel is a certainty to line up for this weekend’s Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield Racecourse, in what is without doubt one of the season’s most highly-anticipated racing returns.

Finishing outside the places just once in only seven competitive race starts so far, Commanding Jewel has not been seen at the races since charging home to win the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in September 7th; straining a tendon in training before suffering a severe foot injury in the lead-up to the 2014 Autumn Carnival.

Pleased with the results of two strong barrier trials in May and June, Corstens said he would not be surprised if the confirmed field of 13 for the 2014 Cockram Stakes met at Group 1 level, but is confident it still remains the perfect launch-pad for Commanding Jewel’s 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.

“You never lock into anything before you see how they come back, especially after a long spell, but once she trialled as well as she did, the Cockram picked itself,” Corstens told Racing Victoria.

“It’s a very good field, you wouldn’t be surprised if it was a Group 1 race.

Gregers will probably go forward, Ollie (jockey Damien Oliver) will just have the good run in behind and hopefully there’s not too much in front of her so she can get a run at the right time.”

A standout performer in each of her racing campaigns since first debuting on course in the spring of 2012, Commanding Jewel secured victory in each of her first two race starts before finishing second in the Group 3 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m), third in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1610m) and winning the featured Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) in October.

Allocated the ideal barrier 1, Commanding Jewel is currently available at generous odds of $7.50 for success in Cockram Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Yet to be confirmed for a race start beyond the 2014 Cockram Stakes, Commanding Jewel is currently available at generous odds of $26 for success in the featured Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 25th.
