Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Having partnered the talented runner on only two occasions competitively prior to this weekend’s Caulfield feature, jockey Dwayne Dunn is confident the form and class of Messene underline the six-year-old as a genuine chance of maiden Group 1 success in the 2014 Memsie Stakes (1400m).
Charging home to register a maiden race win in the TMB Printing Plate (1400m) in early 2012, Dunn was also aboard the Lonhro gelding when failing to beat a single runner home in the Spotless Handicap (1200m) on February 1st, 2013.
Offered a great chance of making amends in the best way possible this weekend, Dunn told AAP he is confident form and an ideal barrier draw point towards a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing for Messene this weekend.
“I rode him at Moonee Valley once first-up and he ran last,” Dunn said of his last race aboard Messene.
“I was 18-wide so I’ll be looking to make amends for that on Saturday.
“From what everyone has seen I think he deserves to be a Group One winner and I think it’s only a matter of time before that box gets ticked.
“I’d say he’ll be very hard to beat on Saturday. He’s got a good barrier and is back on top of the ground. I expect him to run really well.”
Securing an impressive race record of nine wins and three minor places from just 14 competitive starts so far, Messene contested just two races over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, winning both by close to three lengths.
Returning to the track in arguably career-best form so far through the 2014 autumn, the gelding out of Belle Giselle won both the Listed National Sprint (1400m) and Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) first-up before placing a credible seventh in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on April 12th.
Running on to finish second to fellow Memsie Stakes acceptor Sweet Idea in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) first-up on August 9th, Messene is currently available at generous odds of $4.40 for success; registering as sole occupant of the second line of betting with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
