2014 Memsie Stakes Tips & Selections

An elite field of Group 1 stars line-up in Saturday’s Memsie Stakes 2014 and to help you sort the first-up pretenders from the genuine spring contenders in this weight-for-age clash are our tips below.

Moment Of Change

Running as Caulfield Race 8 at 4:40pm, this year’s $400,000 Group 1 New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes (1400m) is shaping up as a crack showdown between the likes of Chris Waller’s market mover Boban ($4) and easing Team Hawkes-trained Messene ($4.40).

Both gallopers were set to run second-up at Rosehill last weekend in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1200m) but scratched out of the Sydney race in favour of a firmer track in Melbourne this weekend.

Both can also be backed stress free through Ladbrokes.com.au on Saturday with the bookie offering money back bonus bets up to $50 if your selection is second past the post in the Memsie!

Early money is coming for Waller’s three-time Group 1 winning six-year-old Boban who has come right in from his generous early price of $6.50 at Ladbrokes.com.au into clear favouritism in the Memsie Stakes odds.

Lonhro gelding Messene meanwhile is at a steady $4.40 despite having beaten Boban last time out when the pair ran second and fourth respectively behind Sweet Idea in the Group 3 Missile Stakes (1200m) on August 9.

Also under $10 to become the 2014/15 racing season’s opening Group 1 winner are the likes of said Missile Stakes winner Sweet Idea at a nice price of $5.50 and Peter Moody’s track and distance specialist Moment Of Change at $6 shooting for his third Group 1 win over the 1400m at Caulfield.

With so many genuine hopes in this awesome Memsie Stakes field is a tough one to sort through.

Earlier we published our exclusive 2014 Memsie Stakes Form Guide & Betting Preview and based on the facts and stats revealed there we’ve got the insider tips for the big one this weekend.

#3 Moment Of Change ($6)

Lots to like about Moment Of Change including this generous price on a horse undefeated at the track and distance with four wins here, including a trio of Group 1 wins. Won the CF Orr Stakes – Futurity Stakes over the 1400m at Caulfield in the autumn and was always going to be vulnerable first-up in the Regal Roller two weeks back when carrying 62kg over 1200m. Did well to finish second behind Hard Stride on the 54kg minimum and will be much better over the Memsie distance. Is proven at weight-for-age which goes a long way in a race like this and his on-pace style is going to see him hard to beat if they go for a walk as predicted by the speed maps.

#11 Sweet Idea ($5.50)

Mares have an awesome record in the Memsie and think this will be close. Atlantic Jewel did it last year to make it seven wins for the female gallopers since 2000 and while Sweet Idea is probably just off that class she’s got claims here. Impressed with her win over the likes of Messene (2nd) and Boban (4th) in Sydney first-up in the Missile Stakes, form the bookies are backing with Boban the current Memsie favourite. She’s get to race in Melbourne however so that’s going to be the key. She was tough in the Missile but this is a tougher assignment and she’s up to 1400m so the pressure is on. Loves to run and loves to win and that will to get to the line could be enough.

#1 Happy Trails ($17)

Paul Beshara’s 2013 Cox Plate runner-up adds value to the exotics here and can’t be discounted in our eyes. The Cox Plate types have performed well in this race before including the 2010 win of dual Cox Plate winner So You Think. Has a decent record at Caulfield (5-1-1-0) and is a proven weight-for-age performer unlike some in this mix. Resumed in a Group 3 in Adelaide a fortnight ago and while finished fifth was finding the line in the end over 1200m with the step up to 1400m to suit. Likely looking for more but has trialled well since the first-up run and will be fitter for it.
