Five for Waller in 2014 Premier’s Cup Field

On Saturday the spring campaigns of some promising stayers will kick off in Sydney’s Premier’s Cup 2014 where the city’s top trainer Chris Waller will saddle-up five chances.

Running as Rosehill Gardens Race 7 this weekend the $100,000 Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) has attracted a capacity field of 13 starters plus four emergencies.

Five of those come from the four-time Sydney premiership winning stables of Waller including the race’s 59.5kg top weight Who Shot Thebarman.

Boasting $6.2 Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) ambitions in Victoria this spring, the Yamanin Vital six-year-old is second-up here following a disappointing resuming run at the same track on August 16.

Who Shot Thebarman ran second last when 14th behind Entirely Platinum in the Spring Preview Stakes (1400m) on a Good (3) track last start but will be a better chance over more distance on Saturday on rain-affected ground.

Currently he is at $41 through to win the 2014 Melbourne Cup and will also likely be a long odds for the weekend, the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) winner to improve when up over more distance.

Waller also has the second heaviest weighted in the race with Sydney Cup runner-up Opinion (58.5kg) to be ridden by Jason Collett with the Oasis Dream gelding also looking to improve on a Spring Preview run (13th).

Coming off a win for Waller meanwhile is French import He’s Your Man out wide in barrier 16 (into 11) on the weekend seeking back-to-back victories.

The Cape Cross six-year-old returned on August 2 to beat home I’m Imposing in the Listed Winter Challenge Series Final (1500m) and should be suited to extra ground this Saturday.

Waller’s two other hopes are then fellow last start winner Hoylonny coming off a victory over the track and distance from a fortnight ago drawn in barrier four and Eiglestein who is the second last emergency and unlikely to get a run.

Also with multiple chances in the Premier’s Cup is Melbourne Cup winning trainer Gai Waterhouse.

She will saddle-up Bonfire in barrier three with Tim Clark aboard as well as Greatwood for Tommy Berry with the inside alley.

Manduro gelding Bonfire has 58kg and comes off a nice first-up second behind Hoylonny in his Australian debut, while fellow British import Greatwood also had a nice resuming run when third to Entirely Platinum and will relish the 54kg minimum on the weekend.

Other notable hopes meanwhile include the John O’Shea-trained Australian Derby runner-up Tupac Amaru in gate two, Peter Moody’s returning Italian Derby placegetter Wish Come True, the always honest Zabeel six-year-old Tremec for John Thompson and the Kris Lees-trained Oriental Lady.

Despite having the extreme outside barrier to overcome on Saturday, German-bred Doyen mare Oriental Lady has won her past three on the trot around Sydney and comes into the race on the back of the most consistent form of all the acceptors.
