2014 The Run To The Rose Field – Almalad v Brazen Beau

A rematch of the JJ Atkins quinella in Brisbane during the winter takes place at Sydney’s Rosehill Racecourse on Saturday with top colts Almalad and Brazen Beau leading the field for The Run To The Rose 2014.

The headline race on the Rosehill card for the weekend, this year’s $125,000 Group 3 MTA NSW Run To The Rose (1200m) has attracted a dozen final acceptors.

Included in the field are a host of livewire chances for next month’s $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m), the three-year-olds’ classic running back at the track on September 13.

Early Golden Rose odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are led by the Gai Waterhouse-trained Almalad and last Saturday’s Silver Shadow Stakes winning filly Bring Me The Maid at $6.

Al Maher colt Almalad gets the chance to secure his favouritism then when racing first-up against a quality field in The Run To The Rose.

A winner of all three of his career starts to date he is out to keep his flawless record intact, racing for the first time since winning the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm back on June 7.

That day there was just a long neck separating him and runner-up Brazen Beau, the latter out to turn the tables in round two this weekend.

Almalad jumps from barrier five on Saturday with Tommy Berry in the saddle on the 60kg top weight under the set weights plus penalties conditions.

His major rival Brazen Beau meanwhile carries 59kg with Hugh Bowman aboard in gate three, Chris Waller’s son of I Am Invincible also having his first start since the JJ Atkins.

Before that he was in top form with a Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) win at Doomben and a second to Time For War in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m).

Brazen Beau is also Golden Rose bound and occupies the second line of the all-in markets at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $8 along with the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Nostradamus.

Drawn one inside of Brazen Beau jumping from barrier two on Saturday, Medaglia D’Oro colt Nostradamus is another notable Run To The Rose acceptor.

He has won two from four so far most recently returning at the track to win the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) defeating Washington Heights (2nd) and Law (3rd) by a length.

San Domenico Stakes runner-up Washington Heights bypasses the Run To The Rose but third placed Law, also from the Waller stables, backs up.

A promising son of Denman he has the rails run on Saturday with Jason Collett taking over riding duties from Glyn Schofield on the youngster who ran last in the Golden Slipper back in April.

Waller’s third hope in the race is then Sniper Fire, the High Chaparral gelding racing for the first time since securing back-to-back Rosehill wins over 1350m and 1500m respectively during the winter.

Also with multiple Run To The Rose acceptors is Godolphin’s private trainer John O’Shea.

O’Shea will saddle-up two nice types in Sarajevo who has the extreme outside barrier to overcome and Ghibellines.

An $11 chance to win the Golden Rose, James McDonald’s mount Sarajevo is a son of Lonhro racing second-up after a good fourth when resuming at Randwick on August 9 behind Scissor Kick in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m).

Shamardal colt Ghibellines meanwhile is also being kept safe in Golden Rose Stakes betting at $15, the Group 2 Todaman Stakes winner over this track and distance last seen running eighth to Mossfun in the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) in the mud.
