Messara Duo Quinella 2014 Up And Coming Stakes

Scissor Kick has scored a narrow win over stablemate Panzer Division to give trainer Paul Messara the quinella in the 2014 Up And Coming Stakes at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Peter Moody-trained Better Land was very well-backed in the lead-up to the Up And Coming Stakes and he looked the likely winner when he loomed on the outside at the 200 metre mark, but his chances of winning were ended when he received a significant check from Liberation, who raced extremely erratically in the straight.

Panzer Division looked as though he had his nose in front in the final stages of the race, but Scissor Kick stormed home on the inside to hit the line as the same time as his stablemate.

The judge managed to find a margin and awarded the race to Scissor Kick, but Racing New South Wales stewards were not satisfied and chief steward Ray Murrihy went to the judges box to analyse the print himself before declaring Scissor Kick the winner.

Messara admitted that he would have been perfectly happy for the race to be declared a dead heat and he was delighted with the performance of bolt colts in the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1200m).

“We are all very excited,” Messara said after the race.

“I am hoping that it is a dead heat; two Group 3 winners in the one race would be a great result.

“It is the perfect result for us.

“I had Panzer Division heading towards the Spring Champion Stakes and Scissor Kick the Golden Rose and that is the direction they are heading in, but they both might end up in the Golden Rose.”

Jockey Tye Angland has now recorded two wins from as many starts on Scissor Kick, after taking out the Listed The Rosebud (1200m) at Royal Randwick on August 9, and he admitted that he did not the Redoute’s Choice colt to win when he was well back with 100 metres left to run.

“Obviously, Gai’s horse threw it away and I thought I was going to run fourth at one stage there,” Angland said.

“He didn’t handle the ground at all.”

The connections of Valentia and Better Land lodged a protest against Liberation, which was upheld and the son of Fastnet Rock is a chance of being banned from racing until he improves his racing manners.
