Earthquake opened as a clear favourite in 2014 Silver Shadow Stakes betting markets, but Godolphin Racing Manager Jason Walsh made it clear throughout the week that trainer John O’Shea did not want to run the Blue Diamond Stakes winner first-up on a rain affected track.

The Royal Randwick track is currently rated a heavy 9, with little chance of improvement, and Earthquake was one of a number of talented horses that was scratched from the Warwick Stakes meeting.

“John is reluctant to give them a testing hit-out first-up given that their targets are a lot deeper into the spring,” Walsh told Racing Ahead yesterday.

Godolphin will still have a runner in the Silver Shadow Stakes, with promising filly Memorial now on the second line of betting with Ladbrokes.com.au for the Group 2 event at a quote of $3.80.

Memorial did not live up to expectations as a two-year-old and was disappointing in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Royal Randwick Stakes (1200m), but produced a strong performance on a wet track in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) and Walsh believes that the Street Cry filly has returned as a more mature filly as a three-year-old.

“Memorial probably will start,” Walsh said.

“Her best career performance to date was in the Slipper on a heavy track and we think that she will get through it ok.

“John is very comfortable in giving her some time after this if it does take a bit more out of her than what we expect.

“She is likely to take her place at this stage.

“She is in great order, she has changed quite a bit physically and is quite a bit more leggy now.”

Bring Me The Maid ($1.85) is currently a clear favourite in the 2014 Silver Shadow Stakes betting market with Ladbrokes.com.au from Memorial ($3.80), Alpha Miss ($6.50), Press Report ($9.50), Nayeli ($13) and Clover Lane ($31), while Twirl and High Above have also been scratched.
