The second of the Group 2 Randwick features this Saturday is the 2014 Silver Shadow Stakes, betting tips on the three-year-old fillies’ clash listed below.
There are currently nine fillies in the mix for this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Coolmore Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) including the odds-on favourite Earthquake paying $1.90 through Ladbrokes.com.au.
The Blue Diamond Stakes winner is 2014 Thousand Guineas-bound in Melbourne this spring, the John O’Shea-trained daughter of Exceed And Excel first-up this weekend.
Her latest effort was a second behind Mossfun in an upset Golden Slipper Stakes result, Earthquake’s only loss to date.
Her four previous wins all were enjoyed on Good (3) tracks but a Heavy-rated Rosehill course looked to get the better of the Godolphin-owned star in the Slipper.
There is a strong chance then that connections will scratch Earthquake out of the Silver Shadow this weekend and look for a firmer track another day for her resuming run.
Following Earthquake in the Silver Shadow Stakes odds are then two other single figure hopes with Golden Slipper third placed Bring Me The Maid ($3.70) also first-up here and O’Shea’s other runner Memorial ($7).
So are these three the ones to lock into your Silver Shadow Stakes trifecta?
Or is there value to be found further down the markets from the likes of Reisling Stakes third placegetter behind Earthquake and Mossfun Alpha Miss ($13) or last start 1300m winner over Liberation at Rosehill Press Report ($19)?
Scratching Update – the following horses have been scratched from the Silver Shadow Stakes with the track rated Heavy 9: 1 Earthquake, 7 Twirl, 9 High Above.
#1 Earthquake (SCRATCHED)
Heavy Track Record: 1-0-1-0
If she runs she’s the one to beat on class alone. Ultra-consistent winning her opening four starts including the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield and the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill but goes better on top of the ground. Her only loss was in the Slipper run on a Heavy (8) and O’Shea hasn’t been shy about saying she comes out on race day morning if the track is Heavy again here. Plenty of other first-up options and with bigger fish to fry over the coming months running her in the mud isn’t worth the risk.
#2 Bring Me The Maid ($3.70)
Heavy Track Record: 2-1-0-1
With or without Earthquake in the field Peter Moody’s market mover is right in this. Sebring filly has had two goes on Heavy going including a nice win over subsequent Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Peggy Jean in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) at Rosehll on March 29. Backed up from that wet track victory on another Heavy (8) at Rosehill when third in the Golden Slipper and has trialled twice since running second both times with improvement to come over the 1200m here first-up from barrier three with Luke Nolen riding.
#8 Clover Lane ($67)
Heavy Track Record: 1-1-0-0
Think $67 as the race’s genuine outsider is a crazy good price for Moody’s other runner, a filly proven on Heavy going. Draw in barrier six so can stay out of trouble and lead-up runs have been eye-catching. Not of the same class or experience as her rivals but the mud tracks can throw up an upset and think a top three finish from this daughter of O’Reilly is it. Won on a Heavy (8) at Bendigo on debut before a third at the same track on August 13. Going up to stakes’ company but for that price worth a look-in to follow stablemate Bring Me The Maid into the finish.
