The Sydney Spring Racing Carnival lead-up races are in full swing at Randwick Racecourse on Saturday including some top class sprinters facing off in the 2014 Show County Quality.
There are 11 in the field for this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m), the handicap clash running as Race 5 on the Warwick Stakes Day program.
Clear favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au and the early market mover as well is the Joe Pride-trained Terravista.
The Captain Rio five-year-old is first-up here and is undefeated when resuming having won all three of his earlier first-up assignments.
The gelding was last seen bombing out on a Slow (7) at Rosehill in late March when 11th to Gordon Lord Byron in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m).
Before that however he won two Group 3 Sydney features on the trot including the Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Warwick Farm over El Roca.
Joining Terravista at single figures in the Show County Quality betting markets are then three other runners with Peter & Paul Snowden’s Fastnet Rock four-year-old Cluster ($5) after three straight wins, the Phillip Atkins-trained Newcastle galloper In Cahoots ($7) and the Group 3 winner Bull Point ($7.50) now with Chris Waller.
So should punters be sticking with the top fancies?
Or is there an upset Show County Quality result on the cards from a longer priced chance such as Waller’s Group 1 performer Whittington ($10) or the Gerald Ryan-trained Oakfield Commands ($15)?
Scratching Update – 8 Whittington, 11 Cluster.
#7 Oakfield Commands ($15)
Heavy Track Record: 3-1-0-0
Tipping an upset with Ryan’s Commands seven-year-old at very attractive odds to win his second on the trot. The veteran has won two of his past three runs, including the Winter Dash at Randwick on June 21 defeating Zaratone to boost his Randwick track record to an impressive three wins and a third from four runs. Two back was fourth in the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) but improved on August 2 when winning a Benchmark 95. Back to stakes’ company and ready for the challenge as one of the better wet track performers having won on a Heavy (8) at Canterbury when prepared by Darren Smith.
#10 In Cahoots ($7)
Heavy Track Record: 1-1-0-0
Broadmeadow-based Bradbury’s Luck gelding is a first-up four-year-old with strong form last time in. Winner of the Gosford Guineas on a Heavy (10) in early April, also Group 2 performed when third to Sidestep in the Royal Sovereign Stakes at Randwick, run on a Slow (6), before a spell. Two trials at home leading up to Saturday, both on Heavy going for a third and a win on August 13. Looks race fit, loves the wet and first-up record is outstanding (4-3-0-0) so lots to like.
#9 Bull Point ($7.50)
Former Gai Waterhouse-trained son of Fastnet Rock makes his four-year-old debut on the weekend. Ran third in last year’s Golden Rose before a hit-and-miss autumn highlighted by his Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) win at Caulfield in February. Also Group 1 fourth at the same track to Moment Of Change in the Futurity over 1400m. Has won one of three at the track but goes really nice fresh with two wins from two first-up starts so far, set to improve on latest effort when seventh on a Heavy Rosehill track on Slipper Day. Can run on a soft track though based on Slow track record (4-2-0-1) son don’t throw out based on the mud.
