The headline race in Sydney on Saturday is the Warwick Stakes 2014 featuring a field full of talented middle-distance spring hopes, betting tips on the weight-for-age showdown listed below.
Due to jump at 3:45pm as Royal Randwick Race 6, the field for this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Pro-Ride Warwick Stakes (1400m) is down to nine after two early scratching from the race Ladbrokes.com.au is offering a Money Back Refund Special on if your horse runs second!
A rain affected track at Randwick, which is set to be in the Heavy range still on Saturday, saw Chris Waller take out his triple Group 1 winner Boban earlier in the week with Joe Pride following suit with the removal of Laser Hawk.
Both trainers are still represented in the Warwick Stakes line-up, betting on the feature led by the Paul Messara-trained Messene at $4.40 through Ladbrokes.com.au.
Coming off an eye-catching first-up second behind Sweet Idea in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) at the track on August 9, the wet track form on Lonhro six-year-old Messene also isn’t impressive making the favourite a risky bet.
Punters then are looking further down the Warwick Stakes betting markets at the nice prices being offered on some of the known wet-trackers.
Included in that category is Waller’s dual Doncaster Mile champion Sacred Falls ($5) and his stablemates Royal Descent ($5.50) and Weary ($5.50) who ran two-three in this year’s Doncaster run on a Heavy Randwick track.
So will the favourite salute? Or will Waller dominate the day?
Scratchings Update – with the track rated a Heavy 9 the following horses have been scratched from the Warwick Stakes: 1 Boban, 3 Laser Hawk, 6 Messene, 10 Dissident.
#8 Weary ($5.50)
Heavy Track Record: 3-2-0-1
French import enjoyed a stellar autumn in Sydney included a Group 2 second in the Ajax Stakes, a Group 3 Doncaster Prelude win and credible third when Waller prepared the Doncaster first four in April. Returned on August 9 at the track when fifth in the Missile Stakes, run on a Good (3), but loves the wet as proven by his Heavy track record so will thrive on the soft track here second up (3-1-1-0) going up to the 1400m on way to the Cox Plate in October.
#2 Sacred Falls ($5)
Heavy Track Record: 2-2-0-0
Tipping a Waller-trained quinella with this known mudlark shooting for his third win from as many starts on Heavy going. Undefeated in the mud the O’Reilly stallion thrived in the wet for their Doncaster win in the autumn and also ran well last start in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) when runner-up to It’s A Dundeel. The distance first-up should also be no issue as he’s won two from three over the 1400m and first-up record is decent (5-2-0-0).
#9 Criterion ($10)
Heavy Track Record: 1-1-0-0
Adding a bit of value to the trifecta and nudging out Waller for the first three is David Payne’s dual Group 1 champ, the Sebring stallion having taken out the Rosehill Guineas – Australian Derby double on soft tracks during the autumn. Trialled well at Rosehill on July 21, has won first-up before but will probably need the run. Distance will also be a bit short for the genuine staying type but on a Heavy track think will surprise with a good effort.
