The feature race for fillies and mares in Sydney this weekend is the Toy Show Quality 2014, betting selections on the Royal Randwick showdown found right here.
A full field of 14 hopes line-up in this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) including the $3.60 favourite, in from $3.80, at Ladbrokes.com.au Gypsy Diamond.
Drawn wide in barrier 10 the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Not A Single Doubt mare races as a four-year-old for the first time following a super autumn as a three-year-old.
Her best form last prep came late on a rain-affected Randwick track, Gypsy Diamond winning the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) before her nice second behind Diamond Drille in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).
In a big field full of spring chances there are four other single figure hopes including Queen Of The Turf Stakes winner Diamond Drille ($6.50) and fellow Group 1 winner Lucia Valentina ($6) which won the Vinery Stud Stakes in the wet at Rosehill on Slipper Day in early April.
So will the Group 1 autumn form stack up on the weekend on another mud track?
Or should punters look for some extra value in the markets from the likes of market mover Thump ($10) out to improve on a first-up ninth when last behind Sweet Idea in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m), the Grahame Begg-trained Bennetta ($12) or Ron Quinton’s Group 3 winner Intimate Moment ($13)?
Scratching Update – with the track rated Heavy 9 the following horses have been scratched: 2 Dear Demi, 3 Lucia Valentina, 7 Neena Rock, 12 Miss Promiscuity, 15(e) Lesley’s Choice.
#4 Gypsy Diamond ($3.60)
Deserving favourite and happy to take her at this still backable price. Consistent first-up record (3-1-1-1) with her latest resuming effort being a second to Sweet Idea in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at this track in February. Excellent autumn including two length Group 3 win on a Heavy (9) at Randwick and her Group 1 second when just a long neck away from the winner. Two trials since will improve getting the 1300m. Randwick record is good (3-1-2-0) and has proven form in the wet.
#6 Bennetta ($12)
Begg’s runner adds some value to the quinella here and should get a gun run from barrier five. Good record over the distance (6-2-1-1) which could be the downfall of some of her rivals, including a third to Sacred Star in the Group 2 QTC Cup in Brisbane and second over 1350m in the Civic Stakes in July. Handles open company well so up against her own kind should do well on the back of a nice trial at the track from the start of the month. Last look at a Heavy track also wasn’t bad when two lengths away third in a Group 3 at Rosehill on Slipper Day so conditions shouldn’t be an issue.
#1 Diamond Drille ($6.50)
Beat Saturday’s favourite in the Queen Of The Turf last time out by a long neck and will be right up there again here. Gai Waterhouse’s Al Maher mare has won one of her two first-up runs and has nice Heavy track form (3-1-1-0) most recently running fourth to Catkins in the Group 2 Emacipation Stakes (1500m) in early April. Two trials to get her race fit including a Randwick win over 1250m from the first of the month.
