A notable performer over four starts through the 2014 Autumn Carnival, jockey Kerrin McEvoy has revealed he is confident of first-up success for Group 1 winner Royal Descent in this weekend’s featured Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick, despite having never partnered the mare competitively.
Saddled by leading trainer Chris Waller, Royal Descent finishing fourth amongst classy competition in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) first-up on March 1st, and while unlucky to be blocked for a run in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) on March 22nd, showed her class when finishing a close second to stable mate and fellow Warwick Stakes acceptor Sacred Falls in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) most notably on April 12th.
No stranger to feature race success aboard Waller-trained horses, having partnered Danleigh to victory in the 2009 Manikato Stakes to deliver the Rosehill horseman a maiden Victorian Group 1, McEvoy told AAP he was thrilled to have picked up the ride on the Redoute’s Choice mare this weekend, and is hoping a successful performance will translate into a continued partnership.
“I haven’t ridden her before but she’s a quality filly and I’m looking forward to getting on her back,” McEvoy said.
“She looks to be moving well in her trials.
“I haven’t booked anything further but I’d like to think I will ride her well and be in the mix for some of Chris’s big-name horses in the spring. He’s got an abundance of talent in his stable.”
Contesting an impressive total of four wins and six minor places from just 16 competitive race starts so far, Royal Descent was a standout over the entire 2013 Australian racing calendar; winning each of her first two starts and continuing to build in form and class on her way to second in the Group 3 Keith Nolan Classic (1600m) and back-to-back victories in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) through autumn.
Unlucky to finish second in the Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) first-up on 2014 Warwick Stakes day, the mare out of Mulan Princess contested a path towards a credible fifth in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) which included a close second to Streama in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) and third in the Group 3 Tramway Stakes (1400m).
Confirmed to again target the Caulfield Cup through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, Royal Descent is currently offered at generous odds of $5.50 for success in this 2014 Warwick Stakes with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au, and will leave from the ideal barrier 2.
