Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
Despite being a chance to scratch out from Saturday’s Silver Shadow Stakes 2014 due to the rain-affected Randwick track, the bookies are taking no chances with resuming Group 1 winner Earthquake installing her as the odds-on favourite for the fillies’ feature.
The John O’Shea-trained daughter of Exceed And Excel is the headline acceptor for this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Coolmore Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) on Warwick Stakes Day this weekend.
Winner of the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) in Melbourne back in February, Earthquake dominates Silver Shadow Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $1.90 to win first-up in Sydney.
She debuted at Randwick with a nice win last November before her string of wins in the autumn, but suffered her first loss last time out on April 5.
That day she was pushed forward from a wide barrier 12 draw in the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill and could only manage to cross three quarters of a length away second to the winner Mossfun.
Her four previous wins all were on Good (3) tracks and Earthquake couldn’t let down as well on the Heavy (8) for the Slipper.
O’Shea then has made it clear all week that if Randwick doesn’t improve on the current Heavy rating then Earthquake would be removed from the field.
There are then just two other single figure hopes in the latest Silver Shadow Stakes odds at Ladbrokes including the $3.70 second pick Bring Me The Maid.
Peter Moody’s Sebring filly also has had her last run in the Golden Slipper running an eye-catching third.
That was her second run on a Heavy track following a win in the mud at Rosehill the start before in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) where she defeated subsequent Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Peggy Jean.
Bring Me The Maid then looks a super chance on another wet course this weekend with Luke Nolen to ride her from barrier three.
O’Shea and Godolphin’s second runner Memorial is then the $7 third fancy with James McDonald to ride from barrier five.
The Street Cry chestnut filly ran fifth in the Golden Slipper crossing two and a half lengths off the winner before a disappointing run at her next start on April 19 when eighth to Eloping in the Group 3 Royal Randwick Stakes (1200m).
She got caught three wide that day however on the worst part of the track in a luckless run she can improve on first-up with good fresh form (2-1-1-0).
Two more fillies are under $20 in the markets then with the Gary Nickson-trained black-type winner Alpha Miss ($13) and Glyn Schofield’s ride Press Report ($19) coming off a Rosehill win over 1300m before things open up.
