Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Just eight runners have been confirmed to line up for this weekend’s Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville Racecourse, highlighted by several of South Australia’s most exciting racing prospects.
A standout performer since returning to the track in the 2014 Autumn Carnival, trainer Ken Sweeney has confirmed Riziz in the final field for the 2014 Penny Edition Stakes.
Securing an impressive total of 10 wins and eight minor places from just 26 competitive race starts to date, Riziz won both the Adelaide Galvanising Handicap (1200m) and Listed Matrice Stakes (1200m) in his first two starts this time in before finishing a fighting third in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) on May 10th.
Disappointing when failing to fire and tenth in the Listed Straight Six (1200m) on May 24th, the Zariz gelding returned to competitive form when charging home to finish third in the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) on July 5th; returning to the winner’s circle in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) last time out on August 9th.
Allocated the ideal barrier 2, Sweeney is confident Spring Stakes jockey Clare Lindop will again get this best from his runner this weekend.
Also included in the final field for the 2014 Penny Edition Stakes is Spring Stakes third Karacatis.
One of South Australia’s most consistent black-type runners in recent seasons, Karacatis has contested an impressive record of six race wins and nine minor places over just 22 competitive starts.
Performing to s typically strong standard over the spring/summer/autumn most recently, the Hussonet gelding won the Listed WH Wylie Handicap (1100m) first-up and continued to build in form and class on his way to winning the Listed Christmas Stakes (1200m) and finishing a credible eighth behind the world’s leading sprinter Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) on February 22nd.
Likely to receive the run of the race from barrier 4, Karacatis will be partnered by apprentice jockey Jake Toeroek for the second time this weekend.
Also performing to a high standard over the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Gamblin’ Guru has been confirmed for a first-up spring appearance in the 2014 Penny Edition Stakes.
Unable to find top gear when fifth in the KJ Powell 3.y.o (1000m) first-up on February 15th, the New Approach gelding was unlucky to fall during the running of the Listed CS Hayes Memorial Cup (1600m), injuring jockey Clare Lindop.
Returning to competitive form in claiming both the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) and Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2000m) back-to-back, Gamblin’ Guru more than stamped his claims as one to watch through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival when finishing fourth in the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) last time out of May 3rd.
Nominated for all of the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m), Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) and Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) this year, trainer Jake Stephens is confident talented stallion Gris Caro will continue to build good competitive form in the 2014 Penny Edition Stakes first-up on Saturday.
Winning the Listed Balaklava Cup (1600m) first-up on September 4th, the With Approval entire finished a close second behind Mourinho in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) on September 27th, and has not been seen at the races since beating just a single runner home in the Listed Victoria Plate (1800m) on November 5th.
