Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Godolphin’s Blue Diamond winning filly Earthquake is the headline acceptor for Saturday’s 2014 Silver Shadow Stakes at Randwick Racecourse.
One of the key support races on the Warwick Stakes Day program in Sydney this weekend, the $175,000 Group 2 Coolmore Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) has attracted nine three-year-old fillies at final acceptance stage.
Leading those and drawn ideally in barrier two for Saturday is the John O’Shea-trained Earthquake to be ridden by her stable’s principal jockey Kerrin McEvoy.
A winner of her opening four career starts including the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) in Melbourne last season, Exceed And Excel filly Earthquake is the sure to be favourite for her first-up run through Ladbrokes.com.au.
Last start on April 5 she ran second to Mossfun in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) in the wet, and she’s likely to encounter another rain-affected track when she kicks off her spring campaign in the Silver Shadow.
The classiest of acceptors, Earthquake is heading towards a run in the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 11 and the clear $4.60 through Ladbrokes.com.au in their futures markets for the classic.
O’Shea and Godolphin will also be represented in the Silver Shadow by Memorial, a James McDonald mount drawn in gate five.
This Street Cry filly has won two of her six starts so far, but hasn’t been seen in the winners’ stall since November last year.
Of Earthquake’s rivals this Saturday the biggest threat looks to come from one on her outside in barrier three where Luke Nolen rides the Peter Moody-trained Bring Me The Maid.
Third pick in futures Thousand Guineas betting paying $8, this daughter of Sebring has won two of her four runs including the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on a Heavy (8) in late March.
She too was last seen running in the world’s richest race for two-year-olds when a close third, beaten under two lengths by the winner, in the Golden Slipper.
While Earthquake hasn’t had an official trial ahead of the weekend, Bring Me The Maid comes off two hit-outs most recently over 760m at Hawkesbury when second to Nostradamus.
Like O’Shea, Moody also launches a double-pronged assault on the Silver Shadow this weekend with his other runner being Clover Lane in gate six for Sam Clipperton.
This New Zealand-bred daughter of O’Reilly won on debut in the mud at Bendigo on July 24 before racing again back at the track just last week (August 13) for a third behind Top Sight over 1100m.
The third trainer with dual Silver Shadow Stakes runners on the weekend is then Gai Waterhouse who will be represented by her Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes winner Nayeli in barrier one with Tommy Berry aboard and Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes runner-up Twirl in gate seven with Tim Clark booked for the ride.
Rounding out the fillies in this year’s Silver Shadow Stakes field are then Lucky Owners filly Alpha Miss (barrier four) who ran third to Earthquake in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes in March, last start Rosehill winner Press Report (barrier nine) and the Anthony Cummings-trained High Above (barrier eight) having just her second career start.
