Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Ace Sydney trainer Chris Waller has accepted for six of his original nine entries to run in Saturday’s Warwick Stakes 2014 at Royal Randwick.
Heading a top line-up of early spring lead-up races, this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Pro-Ride Warwick Stakes (1400m) features a final field of 11 hopefuls.
Over half of those come from the four time premiership winning stables of Waller including his dual Doncaster Mile champ Sacred Falls.
A known mudlark undefeated on Heavy tracks, the likely wet conditions at Randwick for this weekend are set to suit O’Reilly five-year-old Sacred Falls as he returns to racing.
The stallion hasn’t raced since a second behind It’s A Dundeel in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at the track on April 19, but has a credible first up record (5-2-0-0) and outstanding form on soft tracks.
His main assignment this season is the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley, and in the latest Cox Plate odds at Ladbrokes.com.au he is one of the top fancies at a quote of $15.
Before the Queen Elizabeth Sacred Falls relished a Heavy (9) Randwick course to win his second Doncaster Mile in an all-Waller top four finish.
On Saturday Waller will also saddle-up this year’s Doncaster Mile runner-up Royal Descent (barrier two) with Kerrin McEvoy to ride, third placed Weary (barrier three) to be ridden by Brenton Avdulla and fourth placegetter Hawkspur (barrier six) with Tye Angland in the saddle.
Of those three only French import Weary has had an earlier run this season, the grey Astronomer Royal five-year-old having run a first-up fifth behind Sweet Idea in the Group 3 Missile Stakes (1200m) at the track on August 9.
Rounding out Waller’s imposing Warwick Stakes contingent are then former top liner My Kingdom Of Fife in barrier one who hasn’t won a race since October of 2011 and Boban who was far from a confirmed acceptor earlier in the week.
With Randwick still rated a Heavy (8) on Wednesday morning, there is a chance two time Group 1 champion Boban will still be scratched from the race and saved for a firmer track.
He is without a rider currently, drawn in barrier nine and also comes via a run in the Missile Stakes like Weary having finished one better with an eye-catching fourth.
Another top Missile Stakes graduate in Saturday’s Warwick Stakes field meanwhile is the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Messene.
Drawn in gate seven with Kiwi expat James McDonald riding, exciting Lonhro six-year-old Messene is also Cox Plate-bound this spring and tracking well for the $3 million feature on October 25.
A $21 chance in Cox Plate betting, Messene has an outstanding second-up record of three wins and a second from four starts and so looks a top chance to back at Ladbrokes.com.au on Saturday.
Of course with Ladbrokes’ exclusive Warwick Stakes money back bonus bet offer, if your horse runs second you will be refunded up to $50 with a bonus bet so you can back Messene stress free on the weekend!
Also with multiple Warwick Stakes acceptors is Joe Pride with Laser Hawk out in barrier 11 and his Group 1 The Galaxy winner Tiger Tees.
Drawn wide like their stablemate in gate 10, Dubawi seven-year-old Tiger Tees is a Glyn Schofield ride in the Warwick Stakes and is after back-to-back wins following a nice first-up effort in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on August 9.
The final two Warwick Stakes acceptors are then the David Payne-trained Australian Derby winner Criterion (barrier four) back to kick off a big spring with a bang and the Peter Moody-trained Dissident who won the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) in mid-March but who prefers a firm track.
