Peter Moody will give his Golden Rose hope Better Land a chance to improve on a first-up second at Royal Randwick with a run in Saturday’s Up And Coming Stakes 2014 on Warwick Stakes Day.

This year’s $125,000 Group 3 Synergy FX Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) has attracted a final field of 11 three-year-olds, many of which are eyeing a run in the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 13.

One of the best fancied youngsters in the futures Golden Rose odds at Ladbrokes.com.au running in the Up And Coming on Saturday then is Moody’s Shamardal colt Better Land.

A three length winner on debut at Sale back in April, Better Land handled a Heavy (8) track that day and gets another rain-affected course this weekend.

He resumed on August 9 with an eye-catching second in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m), run on a Good (3), showing versatility and plenty of ability when caught wide early and left with plenty of late work to do.

Saturday sees him jump from barrier seven of 11 with Glyn Schofield aboard, Better Land looking to firm in from $10 in early Golden Rose odds.

He is also looking to turn the tables on his last start conqueror with The Rosebud winner Scissor Kick also accepted for the weekend’s clash.

Drawn in barrier five with Tye Angland to ride, the Paul Messara-trained Scissor Kick is also paying $10 in the all-in Golden Rose betting markets at Ladbrokes.

The Redoute’s Choice colt is undefeated this time in with two wins after a seventh on debut at Canterbury back in March.

Both wins this prep have come on Good (3) tracks with his failure on debut occurring on a Slow (7) making him a risky bet on the likely wet Randwick course for Saturday.

Another 2014 Golden Rose bound hopeful at $17 to win the Group 1 out to stake claims in the Up And Coming is Meursault.

Representing Godolphin and trained by their head horseman John O’Shea there is plenty of hype surrounding the Medaglia D’Oro colt.

He debuted at Hawkesbury on May 3 for a big three length win over 1300m but needs to back that up when up in class here.

O’Shea has also accepted with the highly rated Kumaon, the Lonhro colt drawn in barrier one with James McDonald to ride.

Kumaon is well tried with five starts to date, one of which he has won.

He is however Group 2 placed when second behind Time For War in the Pago Pago Stakes, run on a Heavy (9) at Rosehill in late March, and twice performed at elite level.

Sixth behind Peggy Jean in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m), Kumaon was last seen running a close third behind Go Indy Go in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) over the Randwick mile on a Slow (6) on April 26.

Gai Waterhouse also has two acceptors with her Valentia (barrier 10) to be ridden by Tommy Berry and Liberation in gate three with Tim Clark riding.

Group 2 Skyline Stakes winner at the track Valentia hasn’t raced since the Fastnet Rock colt ran 12th to Mossfun in the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper back on April 5.

Fellow Fastnet Rock colt Liberation meanwhile has had two runs this time in for a Rosehill win over 1200m and a second to Press Report over 1300m on August 2 – Saturday to be his first black-type assignment.

Also in the mix are the undefeated duo of Shooting To Win for Peter & Paul Snowden, and the Paul Messara-trained Panzer Division.
