Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Arguably the standout performer in the Group 2 Missile Stakes on August 9th despite finishing fourth, trainer Chris Waller has revealed Boban will not necessarily line up for this weekend’s featured Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick, with track conditions and weather to play a large part in his acceptance.
A standout performer through the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, Boban secured a perfect record of five wins from as many starts, including both the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m).
Performing to a high standard on firmer racing surfaces, Waller told AAP he may save Boban for an appearance in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Victoria’s Caulfield Racecourse one week later should Randwick feature a slow track this weekend.
“The weather is a query with him,” Waller said.
“If it was slow or worse we could save him for the Memsie. That looks like a nice race for him.”
Partnering Boban to each of his three victories at the highest level of Australian racing so far, veteran jockey Glyn Schofield said he is pleased with the way the Bernardini gelding has returned to racing this time in following a less-than consistent autumn preparation.
“He has pulled up well and I am a lot happier with him this time around than in the autumn,” Schofield said.
Contesting an impressive record of nine wins and two minor places from 24 competitive race starts to date, Boban more than stamped his claims as one to watch through the 2014 Sydney Autumn Carnival after his impressive spring campaign, and while winning the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes over his pet distance of a mile on March 8th, was unable to string together much of a consistent run of form, returning to the paddock after beating just a single runner home in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) most recently on April 19th.
Confirmed to be set for the major open mile events over the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington on September 13th if likely to figure as Boban’s major target this time in.
