Anthony Cummings’ Group 1 performed mare Villa Verde heads the Carlyon Stakes 2014 nominations in one of the two black-type highlights at Moonee Valley Racecourse this weekend.
Open to four-year-olds and older, this year’s $120,000 Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) highlights the Melbourne racing action on Saturday along with the $120,000 Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) for three-year-old colts and geldings.
A total of 16 hopefuls make up the early entries for the Carlyon Stakes including Not A Single Doubt four-year-old Villa Verde.
The exciting grey races for the first time since a close fourth behind Driefontein in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) during a trip to Adelaide in late April.
She’s trialled once since at Randwick when third on August 1 in a nice effort, the Group 1 The Galaxy third placegetter looking to kick off another nice preparation on the weekend.
Her first-up record is outstanding with two wins and two seconds from four attempts including her Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) win at Randwick back in March when defeating the likes of Snitzerland and Famous Seamus.
The Carlyon will however be Villa Verde’s first look at the notoriously tricky Moonee Valley circuit and how she handles the tight turns will be key to her chances.
The other headliner among the Carlyon Stakes nominations is Shamal Wind for Robert Smerdon.
The Dubawi mare also ran in the Robert Sangster at Morphettville last start running fifth and won a trial on a Heavy (10) over 800m at Cranbourne on August 4 ahead of her return.
Also high up the ratings are fellow Carlyon Stakes nominees Kencella for Chris Waller who ran second last behind Tiger Tees in The Galaxy last start, former highly spruiked youngster African Pulse and the Peter Moody-trained Angels Beach racing for the first time since stringing together three on the trot in the autumn.
Other notable hopes include the ultra-consistent Danerich gelding Just A Bullet who has won four of his six career starts, Street Boss four-year-old O’Malley coming off back-to-back wins in Melbourne and fellow last start winner Our Nkwazi for Shawn Mathrick – the veteran eight-year-old saluting over 1000m at Moonee Valley on August 2.
