Performing well over four starts through the 2014 Autumn, talented gelding Star Rolling has kicked-off his 2014 Spring Racing Carnival in the best way possible, maintaining a strong sprint to win the featured Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (2000m) in a photo finish at Caulfield Racecourse this afternoon.
Jumping from the gates well, the Casino Prince gelding settled in ideal position on the heels of early leaders Zamorar, Lidari and clear pre-post favourite Puissance De Lune, who set a fair tempo over the back straight and rounding the bend.
Finding the final straight in ideal position, Star Rolling steadily built in momentum; taking up the pace and appearing to have pulled a big enough gap from his competitors until talented British import Spillway stormed into contention; at first glance appearing to cross the line first.
Co-trainers Peter Morgan and Craig Widdison were pleased with Star Rolling’s first-up performance in the 2014 P.B. Lawrence Stakes, confirming the featured Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) in October as the major target this time in.
“Last spring I reckon I had the best horse and we kept getting balloted out and we had nowhere to go and it was a shame, and when we came to autumn I didn’t have quite the same horse but he still ran good races against good horses,” Morgan said following the race.
“I think this spring I’ve got him back to how he was last spring. I don’t think he’s quite fit but there’ll be a lot of improvement in him.”
“He’ll probably go three weeks into the Dato (Group 2 Dato’Tan Chin Nam Stakes) now, and he seems to like Moonee Valley so that should suit him well,” Widdison said.
“He’s got good natural speed and can roll along on a good tempo like that so it makes it easier when they put themselves in the race.
“We’ve always had the Caulfield Cup in mind for a horse like him, so that’s the path we’ll take at this stage and see how that plays out.”
Jockey Stephen Baster delivered a strong ride on Star Rolling in the 2014 P.B. Lawrence, and is excited by the prospects of a long and prosperous spring preparation.
“Going over his form it feels like he’s been around forever but that was only his 12th start which is amazing, and everything he’s done in his track work has been fantastic,” Baster said after dismounting.
“On the line I thought I’d got beat, so I’m very happy he got his nose out there.
“He surprised me early; I thought he showed more speed than what he did because he’s been a bit fresh and he struggled a little bit up the hill so I had to take my time getting there.
“To his credit he fought on, so I think it’s onwards and upwards from here.”
Overcoming a talented field of nine opponents in the 2014 P.B. Lawrence, Star Rolling is sure to firm noticeably in early markets for the 2014 Caulfield Cup.
