Running as Race 7 at 3:55pm this year’s $150,000 Group 3 KS Environmental Vain Stakes (1100m) is shaping up as a battle of the stablemates.

Mick Price saddles up three from his local stables including race favourite at Nordic Empire ($3.10) and market mover Jabali ($4.20) who occupies the second line of Vain Stakes betting.

Nordic Empire gets the inside running if jockey Craig Newitt takes them there drawn in barrier one, the promising Wilander colt having won two of his three starts to date including a last start 1000m effort at Moonee Valley at the start of the month.

Group 1 Blue Diamond runner-up Jabali meanwhile is first up racing for the first time since an 11th to Mossfun in the Golden Slipper and has drawn gate two with Damien Oliver to ride the son of Exceed And Excel.

Also at single figures to win is then the Robbie Laing-trained Boomwaa ($8 in from $8.50) out wider in barrier nine and second-up this season following a third to Nordic Empire at the Valley on August 2.

So are these three the right horses to lock into your Vain Stakes trifecta selections?

Or should punters be looking further down the markets for this year’s Vain Stakes winner with nice odds on offer for the likes for Price’s third runner Cornrow ($12) running for the first time since a Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes third on April 12 and stakes winner at the track on debut back in October Moonlight Hussler ($13) who are drawn wide in barrier s11 and 12 respectively?

#5 Jabali ($4.20)

Money is coming for Price’s promising Group 1 performer who is the market mover, consistent colt that runs well fresh having finished second in both their first-up runs so far, runner-up in the Blue Diamond but didn’t handle the Golden Slipper, will be better off a break looking to finally break their maiden status, Caulfield is their pet track and is drawn for a gun run with Oliver’s services aiding their cause.

#1 Zululand ($15)

At an easing price that we’re happy to take this smart Fastnet Rock colt hasn’t won at Caulfield, or first-up, but enjoyed a Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes win (1400m) in March, also ran fifth in the Group 1 Sydney edition in the wet and finished second best to Go Indy Go in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes over the Randwick mile next start, will improve over more distance heading towards the spring features on roomier tracks but think class alone is enough to suggest a top three finish.

#6 Nordic Empire ($3.10)

Lots of hype on Price’s up-and-comer who has the fitness advantage over their stablemates and many others in the field after a first-up Moonee Valley victory this month on the back of a trial win, had a Caulfield run on debut back in November defeating Zululand that day by nearly two lengths, carried 58kg last start defeating Stingray and Boomwaa and gate looks ideal form them to go forward and give them something to run down.
