Smith Fancies Speedy Snitzel in Quezette Stakes 2014

After describing Saturday’s 2014 Quezette Stakes favourite Royal Snitzel as “one of the fastest fillies” he’s ever ridden, skilled hoop Dale Smith is looking forward to continuing his association with her this weekend.

The pair combine forces for a third time with the Mick Price-trained daughter of Snitzel the overriding favourite to win this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Lister Quezette Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield Racecourse.

Markets for the PB Lawrence Stakes Day feature at have the undefeated Royal Snitzel listed as the $2.90 top fancy, a firming price the punters have been happy to take.

She is drawn in gate six and comes off back-to-back wins in her opening two career starts, the barrier ideal for Saturday according to Smith.

“I was saying to the owners the other day that if I could pick any gate, it would be either five or six,” he told AAP.

“It allows me to bounce her out and assess the speed in the first 50 metres.

“By sitting outside the leader, leading or racing one-one, she can control the race fairly well within herself.”

The first of Royal Snitzels’ two previous wins was an easy two and a half length effort at Donald on June 19.

Following was a trip to Caulfield, where she will appreciate returning to on Saturday, for a half length victory over the Luke Oliver-trained Zeletto in the $80,000 Ascend Sales Trophies Handicap (1100m).

Also an offspring of Snitzel, three-year-old colt Zeletto previously won on debut at Werribee by five lengths adding even more merit to Royal Snitzel’s Caulfield win on July 5.

For both of those smart wins the filly was ridden by Smith who retains the ride for her opening black-type assignment in the Quezette Stakes.

Having had a nice opinion of Price’s promising runner since her debut win, Smith is confident she can rise to the occasion on Saturday and make the step up to stakes company ahead of a big spring campaign.

“She’s one of the fastest fillies I have ridden out of the machine and she puts herself straight into the race,” Smith said.

“That’s half the battle if a horse can put itself on the speed and stay out of the ruck.”

If successful on Saturday Royal Snitzel will become the third Quezette Stakes winner for her local trainer Price following his victories with Bel Mer (2007) and Corsaire (2009).

Group 1 options for Royal Snitzel this time in include a trip to Sydney for the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 13 that she pays $21 through to win.

That is the same quote she is at in the futures odds for the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) up over the mile back at Caulfield on October 11 – Caulfield Guineas Day.

Royal Snitzel had a final serious piece of work ahead of the Quezette on Tuesday morning at Caulfield impressing Smith with a smart gallop.
