Returning off an injury enforced layoff following a failed Cox Plax effort last spring, Darren Weir’s defending champ Puissance De Lune is back to defend its PB Lawrence Stakes 2014 title on Saturday.
Top Aussie bookmaker Ladbrokes.com.au has installed the Shamardal six-year-old at the top of their early markets for this weekend’s edition of the $200,000 Group 2 Back to Caulfield P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m).
Puissance De Lune pays $3.20 to go back-to-back in the weight-for-age showdown but Ladbrokes punters will also get money back up to $50 as a bonus bet if they back the favourite, or any other horse in the race, and it finishes second on Saturday.
First-up winner of the PB Lawrence 12 months ago, Puissance De Lune went on to have a solid campaign that included two Group 1 seconds in the Makybe Diva Stakes and Turnbull Stakes.
Injury however saw a Cox Plate bid fail with the horse running 12th behind Shamus Award, pulling up lame post-race and then spending the subsequent seven months recovering.
Following Puissance De Lune in the PB Lawrence Stakes betting markets are then four other single figure hopes with:
- #5 Lidari ($5) – One of two in the race for Peter Moody, this Acclamation stallion is a French import with Group 2 winning form at Flemington down under already, latest effort was a 16th in the Doncaster Mile though back in April when a Heavy (9) track got the better of the now six-year-old, will be better on firmer ground here and boast a good first-up record (6-3-1-0)
- #8 Star Rolling ($6.50) – Wide barrier 11 draw for Peter Morgan’s Casino Prince gelding making its five-year-old debut here on the back of a solid autumn in Melbourne that included a Group 3 second and Group 2 third behind reigning Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente, last start was dead last to that same horse in the Australian Cup when outclassed in the end, better this time in
- #1 Foreteller ($7.50) – Two time Group 1 winner from the Chris Waller camp, this veteran Dansili eight-year-old also ran last in its most recent start when ninth to current Cox Plate favourite Silent Achiever in The BMW over 2500m in Sydney, Melbourne form before that was better though and included an Australian Cup third
- #6 Zamorar ($8) – David Bourne-trained six-year-old on the short seven day turnaround following a nice third behind Group 1 winner Tiger Tees in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) at Flemington last Saturday, before that the son of Scandal Keeper won over 1000m but at Caulfield the form isn’t quite as good (7-1-3-1)
Other notable hopes just outside these chances at more generous odds then include David Hayes’ imported Rail Link stallion Spillway ($10) and early market mover Gig ($15) coming off a second over the 1200m here in the Bletchingly Stakes.
