Three Stables Dominate 2014 San Domenico Stakes Field

Three of Sydney’s leading stables dominate the diminutive but classy field for Sydney’s feature race this Saturday with two entries in the San Domenico Stakes 2014 each for Team Hawkes, Gerald Ryan and Melbourne Cup winning trainer Gai Waterhouse.

The sole black-type on the Rosehill Gardens program this weekend, the $125,000 Group 3 Smithfield RSL Club San Domenico Stakes (1100m) is shaping up as a battle of the stables.

Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes have accepted for both of their entries with Nostradamus first-up and Bugatty out to improve on a sixth last time out drawn beside each other in barriers four and five respectively.

Having had to delay the spring return of their Golden Slipper champion Mossfun due to a virus, their attention is now on their lower key three-year-olds including this duo.

The best fancied of the pair is Medaglia D’Oro colt Nostradamus who ran seventh to Earthquake in the Blue Diamond Stakes last time out.

They came through a Hawkesbury trial from Monday well where they defeated Golden Slipper third placegetter Bring Me The Maid in a promising effort.

Gai Waterhouse is also dually represented in Saturday’s San Domenico Stakes field with Wandjina (barrier nine) and Hampton Court (barrier six).

Snitzel colt Wandjina is first-up after back-to-back fourths in March including behind Ghibellines in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at this track and distance.

They’ve had two trials to improve their fitness ahead of the spring the same as their stablemate Hampton Court, also resuming, whose form from their opening campaign suggest they’ll be better over more distance.

The third trainer with two San Domenico acceptors is then Gerald Ryan saddling up Washington Heights and Ygritte.

Ryan’s two have come up trumps with the barriers with Brenton Avdulla’s mount Washington Heights on the rails and Ygritte in gate three with Kerrin McEvoy to ride.

Both are likely to feature high up the San Domenico Stakes betting markets too following nice form last time in.

Promising Commands colt Washington Heights has had just the one run when second on debut behind Hallowed Crown in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) on a Heavy (8) Randwick track on April 12.

They trialed on August 4 over 900m at Rosehill running fourth to Tuscan Falls and are tipped for a big three-year-old campaign.

Ygritte meanwhile is better tried with four starts for four top two runs.

After a debut win at Kembla Grange on February 1 the Snitzel filly ran second in her subsequent three runs all in Group 3 company including behind subsequent Golden Slipper winner Mossfun in the Widden Stakes at Rosehill.

Her latest start was on April 19 at Randwick behind Eloping in the Keith McKay Stakes and first-up over 1200m at Rosehill should suit the 2014 Golden Rose – Thousand Guineas nominee.

To wear the number one saddlecloth meanwhile is Law in barrier seven, Glyn Schofield to ride the NSW Thoroughbred Breeders Plate winner in their debut for new trainer Chris Waller.

Rounding out this year’s San Domenico Stakes field are then the David Payne-trained Bold Circle (barrier two) out to improve on a first-up eighth in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m) last Saturday and Garry Frazer’s in-form Snitzel filly Sheer Style.
