A promising line-up of Golden Rose bound three-year-olds run in The Rosebud 2014 on Missile Stakes Day in Sydney on Saturday and to help you discover the genuine contenders from the early season pretenders below are our tips on the Randwick showdown.
Set to jump at 2:55pm (AEST) as Randwick Race 5, this year’s $100,000 Listed The Rosebud (1200m) features a field of eight runners with current favourite being the John O’Shea-trained Sarajevo.
Drawn nicely in barrier three with James McDonald riding the Lonhro colt pays $2.70 through Ladbrokes.com.au in their The Rosebud markets and is also the shortest priced of Saturday’s hopes in the futures odds for the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) next month.
They’ve had just the one run to date however with a win at Randwick’s Kensington track back in April so whether they live up to the hype will go a long way in determining their Group 1 chances in the Rose.
Also at single figures then are five other runners including Gai Waterhouse’s promising 2014 Thousand Guineas bound filly Nayeli ($3.10), the Peter Moody-trained Better Land ($7) and last start Kensington winner Inkling who has a big 59kg top weight to overcome.
So will Sarajevo return with a win and justify the short price?
Or will there be an upset The Rosebud result forcing a reshuffle of the futures Golden Rose betting markets?
#2 Nayeli ($3.10)
More Than Ready filly from the Gai Waterhouse stables won two on the trot to kick off her career in the summer including a Group 3 at Caulfield. Failed in the Blue Diamond but has matured physically since and has improved as proven with her two nice Randwick trial wins, most recently over 1050m on July 18. Tommy Berry rode her there and stays on for The Rosebud where he rates her a top chance, Berry also rating her a Group 1 filly later in the carnival.
#5 Scissor Kick ($8.50)
Paul Messara’s Redoute’s Choice colt is up in class here after breaking their maiden status in their second run at Canterbury on July 23 but could surprise. Nicely bred, showed they could handle distance with their 1250m win. Jump from barrier six with Tye Angland riding and think they’ll appreciate the firm ground in their big city debut.
#1 Inkling ($7.50)
If they run, and there’s still a chance the Snowdens will save them for the San Domenico Saturday week after they were allocated top weight here, think Inkling is up for a good showing. Has won two of their three starts to date most recently impressing at the Kensington track over 1150m on July 26 defeating Sheer Style by one and a quarter.
