This Saturday a host of topline carnival contenders will stake their early spring claims with a first-up run in Sydney’s Missile Stakes 2014– betting tips on the season’s opening weight-for-age feature found below.
Nine excellent runners resume in this year’s $175,000 Group 2 McGrath Estate Agents Missile Stakes (1200m), scheduled as Randwick Race 6 at 3:35pm (AEST), with a wide open market at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Two first-up specialists are battling for top spot in the Missile Stakes odds with the Gary Portelli-trained Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winner Rebel Dane ($3.60) to appreciate the firmer track and Gai Waterhouse’s former star filly Sweet Idea ($3.80) in her four-year-old debut.
There are plenty of other livewire chances in the mix however if the Missile Stakes betting markets are to go by with exciting Team Hawkes-trained Messene ($4) and Chris Waller’s recently crowned NSW Horse of the Year Boban ($8.50) also at single figures.
So who will rise to the occasion early this prep? And whose best will be seen a little later?
#5 Messene ($4)
First-Up Record: (5-3-1-0)
Much awaited return from the autumn’s Ajax Stakes winner, where they beat home Weary by three lengths. Last seen running seventh in the Doncaster Mile but that run is better than the result suggests as they held on after a luckless run on an unsuitably heavy track. Two trials since have them fit and ready to go, get a gun draw in barrier one with top hoop James McDonald on. Firm track at Randwick works to their favour, need to rise to WFA level but their racing style suggests they’ll handle it and kick off a great campaign here.
#7 Sweet Idea ($3.80)
First-Up Record: (3-2-1-0)
Gai Waterhouse’s Snitzel mare races as a 4YO for the first time here after a strong 3YO season that included a Magic Millions Guineas win at the Gold Coast, a Group 2 Randwick win in February and a second in the Group 1 Coolmore. Latest start was a TJ Smith ninth but, like Messene, their chances were ruined by a Heavy track. Won their lead-up trial at Randwick over 1050m on July 18 so should be ready to fire at a track they’ve got a great record at (3-2-0-0).
#6 Weary ($10)
First-Up Record: 4-1-1-1
One of three in the race for Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller. The French import was runner-up to Messene in the Ajax Stakes in March before their Group 3 Doncaster Prelude win, third in the Group 1 over the mile and last start second in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes. Loves Randwick, distance could be a bit short but first-up will go okay over it. Prefers a softer track too but class alone put them in the top three here.
